General Information
The Sessila approach is a socio- constructivist pedagogical approach; this means it is an approach based on the notion that the child's learning depends on the quality of his interactions and relationships with adults and his peers. Learning is the result of a close interaction between the child and his experiences. Teachers accompany the child in his development rather than adopting a didactic teaching approach.
Principles
• Development is a global process and the child develops simultaneously on multiple dimensions
• The child is the principal agent of his/her development
• Every child has his own learning pace and potential
• The child develops according to the way he lives each experience
Philosophy
The child develops skills and understanding and acquires knowledge in a way that is unique to him. Everyone develops at their own pace and in his own way depending on the interaction between himself and his experiences. Sessila Academy offers educational activities without placing predetermined learning outcomes on the child in order to make room for this interaction. Therefore, each child can give the activity a personal direction and learn according to his own perception of the activity. The teacher helps the child by stimulating the learning process through open questions that allow the child to move in a direction that is natural to him. Therefore, the child remains the principal agent in his learning process.
Sessila Academy does not seek to present a certain amount of knowledge to the child, but rather to give him the opportunity to develop habits and skills that will allow him to explore and learn in his everyday life, upon entry to kindergarten and particularly within the Early Learning Program (ELP). The ELP is widely recommended by the Ministry of Education of Ontario and school boards in the region. During the next stages of learning and throughout his school years, these skills will be more beneficial than any other fixed knowledge.
Goal
According to the Sessila philosophy, the emphasis is placed on experiences rather than on the results. The teacher and the child can therefore focus on the development of learning not limited by predefined expectations. The goal of the program is to develop skills, abilities and interest to learn.
