BIRD OF THE WEEK – NORTHERN PINTAIL Northern Pintails are one of the earlier returning ducks in the spring, often arriving in the Lethbridge area before the lakes have thawed out. Birders get quite excited when Pintails return because they know it won’t be long before other waterfowl start showing up. Pintails usually prefer fresh, shallow wetlands, prairie potholes and lake edges rather than larger bodies of water. Good places to find them during spring migration are meltwater pools in almost any farm field in the Lethbridge area. Pintails are common in the Lethbridge area from early March until late October. Northern Pintails get their name from their long, tapered tail feathers which are quite noticeable in flight or on the ground. Males have reddish-brown heads, white breasts, with a white stripe on the neck and mostly gray body. Females are mottled brown. Both have long, tapered necks and dark, bluish-colored bills. Northern Pintails are “dabblers”. They usually feed by dabbling or tipping rather than diving. So, if you see a duck’s bum in the air when it is feeding in the water, it is a “dabbler”! Did you know they are also referred to as “puddle” ducks? This is most likely due to their preference for shallow water. Puddle ducks can launch straight into the air, whereas diver ducks must run along the surface of the water to get flying. #BirdOfTheWeek #HSNC
