The rare Charitable Research Reserve
Description
Founded in 2001, rare owns, stewards and protects in perpetuity a 900+ acre urban land trust. We are dedicated to conservation, research and education. Less than one hour west of Toronto in Waterloo Region, rare exists in one of the fastest growing urban areas in Canada. The property presents a unique opportunity to understand our environment and provides a rare account of natural and human histories.
Within the northern limit of the Carolinian forest zone of North America, rare is also within the biological zone with the greatest biodiversity in Canada. The property consists of undisturbed natural landscapes, with diverse habitats, including those characteristic of pre-settlement times in southern Ontario.
At rare, we are currently in the midst of a $17 million capital campaign, entitled "A Natural Investment". The funds are needed to fulfill our vision of conservation and to implement the Chain of Learning they've formed, which connects the work of researchers and scientists working on the reserve to the public programs and the student education programs helping the youngest of children form a bond with nature.
Our current priority is to Open the Door to Environmental Education for students and meet the goals of Every Child Outdoors. To learn more about the campaign and discover how you can help us realize this vision, visit our main page at www.raresites.org.
