An American reporter later asked John Lennon, "How do you feel about teenagers imitating you with Beatle wigs?" John replied "They're not imitating us because we don't wear Beatle wigs." February 20th : 1941, Born on this day, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Canadian singer, songwriter who had the '71 UK No.7 single 'Soldier Blue'. She wrote 'Up Where We Belong' a '82 US No.1 & UK No.7 for Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes. February 21st : 1968, Otis Redding had his 1st entry on the UK singles chart with '(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay', it went on to be a No.3 hit. The song became the first posthumous single to top the charts in the US. February 22nd : 1987, Andy Warhol, pop artist and producer died after a gall bladder operation. The founder of the Pop Art movement, produced and managed The Velvet Underground, designed the Velvet Underground And Nico 'peeled banana' and The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album covers. February 23rd: 2003, Norah Jones cleaned up at the 45th Grammy Awards, held at Madison Square Garden, New York. The singer, songwriter won, Album of the year and Record of the year, with 'Don't Know Why.' Song of the year, Best new artist and Best female pop vocal for 'Don't Know Why'. February 24th : 1973, The Byrds made their final live appearance when they played at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, New Jersey. February 25th : 2011, Susan 'Suze' Rotolo, died from lung cancer. She was the one time girlfriend of Bob Dylan, and inspiration of some of his early songs. Susan's in one of the decade's signature images, walking with Dylan arm-in-arm for the cover photo of his breakthrough album Freewheelin Bob Dylan. Forch February 12th : 1997, U2 held a press conference in the Lingerie Department at the Greenwich Village Kmart store in Manhattan, New York City, to announce their Pop Mart world tour. The tour was set to start in Las Vegas on April 25th of this year. February 13th : 1970, On this day, Friday the 13th, Black Sabbath released their debut self-titled studio album on Vertigo records in the UK. Peaking at No.8 on the charts, the album has been recognized as the first album to be credited with the development of the heavy metal genre. February 14th : 1986, Frank Zappa appeared on an episode of the television series Miami Vice. Zappa portrayed a crime boss named 'Mr. Frankie.' February 15th : 1979, At the 21st Grammy Awards, the 'Saturday Night Fever' soundtrack won Album of the Year and The Bee Gees were named Best Pop Group and Best Arrangement for Voices for 'Staying Alive'. February 16th: 1982, The Jam were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'A Town Called Malice', & 'Precious', their third No.1 spent three weeks at the top of the chart. February 17th : 1975, AC/DC released their debut album 'High Voltage'. The album featured a cover of 'Baby, Please Don't Go' a blues song first recorded by Big Joe Williams and 'She's Got Balls' which was written about singer Bon Scott's ex-wife Irene, the first AC/DC song for which he wrote lyrics. Forch February 5th : 1972, Paul Simon released his first new song without Art Garfunkel, 'Mother and Child Reunion', which peaked at No.4 in the US. Simon got the idea for the song's title from a chicken-and-egg dish called Mother and Child Reunion that he saw on a Chinese restaurant's menu. February 6th : 1998, American singer and guitarist Carl Wilson from The Beach Boys died aged 51 after a long battle with lung cancer. He sang lead vocal on 'God Only Knows', 'Good Vibrations,' and 'I Can Hear Music' as well as backing vocals on Elton John's 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me.' February 7th : 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, on sale for 35 Cents, (2/6). John was named as Rolling Stone's Man Of The Year. February 8th : 1981, R.E.M. made their first ever-recording sessions at Bombay Studios Smyrna, Georgia. Tracks included 'Gardening At Night', 'Radio Free Europe' and '(Don't Go Back To) Rockville.' February 9th: 2009, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant took home five prizes for his collaboration with bluegrass singer Alison Krauss at this year's Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles. The duo won album of the year for Raising Sand and record of the year for ‘Please Read The Letter. February 10th : 2008, Amy Winehouse won five prizes at this year's Grammy Awards, including song of the year and record of the year, both for her single 'Rehab', and best new artist. February 11th : 2014, Queen made UK chart history by being the first act to sell 6 million copies of 1 album. Forch January 29th : 1961, Bob Dylan achieved his dream of meeting his idol Woody Guthrie when Guthrie was on weekend release from hospital where he was being treated for Huntington's Chorea. Dylan told him; ‘I was a Woody Guthrie jukebox’. Guthrie gave Dylan a card which said: ‘I ain't dead yet’. January 30th : 2010, Neil Young was named the Musicares person of the year for his "influential artistic accomplishments and philanthropic work". A string of artist including Elton John, Norah Jones, James Taylor, Elvis Costello, John Forgarty, Dave Matthews and Sheryl Crowe performed his songs as he was honoured by the US Recording Academy at the LA Convention Centre. January 31st : 1987, Born on this day, Marcus Mumford, English musician, best known as the lead singer of Mumford & Sons. Their second studio album 'Babel' released in 2012 debuted at number one on both the UK Albums Chart and the US Billboard 200. It was the fastest selling album of 2012 in the UK. February 1st : 1949, RCA Records issued the first ever 45rpm single, the invention of this size record made jukeboxes possible. February 2nd: 1979, Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious died of a heroin overdose in New York City. February 3rd : 1992, On their first European tour Pearl Jam played at The Esplanade Club in Southend, England to 300 people, their first ever UK show. February 4th : 1977, Fleetwood Mac released Rumours. The songs 'Go Your Own Way', 'Don't Stop', 'Dreams', and 'You Make Loving Fun' were released as singles. Rumours is Fleetwood Mac's most successful release; along with winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978, the record has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. Forch January 22nd : 2012, Adele broke an American chart record that has stood for years after being set by The Beatles and Pink Floyd. The singers second album 21 clocked up 16 weeks at No.1 on the US chart matching the success of the Titanic original soundtrack. '21', released last January had now beaten The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's and Pink Floyd's The Wall which had previously held the accolade with runs of 15 weeks at No.1. January 23rd : 2000, Santana started a three week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Supernatural', the album which went on to win eight Grammy awards spent a total of nine weeks at No.1 during this year. January 24th : 1992, Nirvana played their first ever show in Australia at the Phoenician Club in Sydney. Also on the bill, Tumbleweed and The Meanies. January 25th : 1938, Born on this day, Etta James, singer, who had 9 US Top 40 hits during the 60's including the 1996 UK No.5 single 'I Just Want To Make Love To You'. James died on January 20, 2012. January 26th: 1980, Prince made his TV debut on the US show American Bandstand. When interviewed after his performance the singer froze and struggled to reply to the questions he was being asked. January 27th : 1977, The Clash signed to CBS Records in the UK for £100,000. January 28th : 1968, Born on this day, Canadian musician singer songwriter, Sarah McLachlan, who had the 1997 US No.2 album 'Surfacing'. McLachlan who has sold over 40 million albums worldwide is the organiser of the Lilith Fair US tour. January 16th : 2008, Radiohead were forced to abandon an intimate gig at Rough Trade East records in London after police raised safety fears. They moved the gig to a nearby club after 1,500+ fans came when the event was announced in the morning promising tickets to the 1st 200 fans. January 17th : 1955, Born on this day, Steve Earle, US singer, songwriter who had the 1988 UK No. 45 single 'Copperhead Road'. Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Peters, Shawn Colvin have covered his songs. January 18th : 2016, The Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey died at the age of 67 in NYC from complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia. Frey co-founded the Eagles in 1971 with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. January 19th: 1943, Born on this day, Janis Joplin, US singer who died on Oct 4th 1970 after an accidental heroin overdose. She was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in LA; her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach. January 20th : 1982, During an Ozzy Osbourne concert in Des Moines, Iowa, a member of the audience threw a bat onto the stage. Stunned by the light, the bat lay motionless, and thinking it was a rubber fake, the singer picked it up and attempted to bite its head off. As he did this, the bat started to flap its wings and Ozzy soon realized it wasn't fake but in fact alive. After the show Ozzy was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital for rabies shots. January 21st : 1972, Pink Floyd appeared at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, England. This was the first time that they were able to perform the whole of what became The Dark Side of The Moon album in its entirety, the previous night's performance in Brighton having been halted for technical reasons. It became his 1st and only album to reach No.1 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the US. January 9th : 1997, David Bowie performed his 50th Birthday Bash concert at Madison Square Garden, New York with guests Frank Black, Sonic Youth, Robert Smith of The Cure, The Foo Fighters, Lou Reed, and Billy Corgan and Placebo. Proceeds from the concert went to the Save The Children fund. January 10th : 2016, English singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, painter, and actor David Bowie died from liver cancer at his New York home two days after releasing the album Blackstar on his 69th birthday. January 11th : 1967, The Jimi Hendrix Experience recorded 'Purple Haze' at De Lane Lea studios in London. He stated 'The Purple Haze,' was about a dream he had and that he was walking under the sea." In concert, he sometimes substituted lyrics for comic effect; "'scuse me while I kiss the sky" was rendered "'scuse me while I kiss this guy" (while gesturing towards his drummer Mitch Mitchell). January 12th: 1974, The Steve Miller Band were at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'The Joker', their first of 3 No.1's. It reached No.1 on the UK chart in 1990. January 13th : 1973, Eric Clapton made his stage comeback at the Rainbow Theatre, London, with Pete Townsend, Ronnie Wood, Stevie Winwood, Jim Capaldi. The night's 2 shows were recorded for the 'Rainbow Concert' album. Townshend organised the concert to help Clapton kick his heroin addiction. January 14th : 1966, David Jones changed his name to David Bowie to avoid confusion with Davy Jones from The Monkees, just in time for the release of his single, 'Can't Help Thinking About Me'. He would later say that he chose "Bowie" because he liked that "big American bear-killin' knife." 1977, David Bowie released his 11th studio album Low, the first of 3 with Brian Eno termed the "Berlin Trilogy". The track 'Sound and Vision' was released as a single and used by the BBC on trailers at the time, providing much needed exposure, as Bowie opted to do nothing to promote the single, and helped the song reach No.3 on the UK. Forch January 1st : 1959, Johnny Cash played a free concert for the inmates of San Quentin Prison, California. One of the audience members was 19 year-old Merle Haggard, who was in the midst of a 15 year sentence (he served three years) for grand theft auto and armed robbery. January 2nd : 1969, The entire shipment of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album 'Two Virgins' was seized by authorities in New Jersey due to the full frontal nude photograph of the couple on the cover. The album was eventually wrapped in plain brown paper in record stores. January 3rd: 1976, Bob Dylan's song, 'Hurricane', peaked at No.33 on the Billboard singles chart, helping to cause enough publicity to eventually get former boxer Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter released from jail. The song promoted Carter's innocence. January 4th : 2009, Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant was voted the Greatest Voice In Rock by listeners of radio station Planet Rock (UK). Plant beat Queen's Freddie Mercury, Free's Paul Rodgers and Deep Purple's Ian Gillan to the top spot. January 5th: 1973, Bruce Springsteen released his debut album 'Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.' Recorded in a single week the album only sold about 25,000 copies in the first year of its release. Both 'Blinded By The Light' and 'Spirit In The Night' were released as singles but neither made a dent in the charts. Manfred Mann's Earth Band later released a version of 'Blinded By The Light' on their album 'The Roaring Silence,' which reached No.1 on the US charts in 1977. January 6th : 1958, Gibson guitars launched it' 'Flying V' electric guitar. Guitarists who played a Flying V include, Albert Collins, Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan and Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top. January 7th : 1971, Black Sabbath released 'Paranoid' their second studio album in the US. The album features the band's best-known signature songs, including the title track, 'Iron Man' and 'War Pigs'. The album was originally titled War Pigs, but allegedly the record company changed it to Paranoid, fearing backlash from supporters of the ongoing Vietnam War.
