Baton Rouge, Let's clean up and stop litter! In further efforts to clean up our City/Parish, on 5/18 and 5/19 we had our Litter Response Team clean up the canal at Stanford/LSU Ave and West Lakeshore Drive, by the LSU Lakes. As mentioned in the past, this particular spot is highly affected by litter as it runs behind several gas stations and restaurants before it enters Bayou Duplanier, it also sits in a residential area with a high volume of pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The litter ranges from Styrofoam cups and plastic bottles to paper products and more, all of which enter the canal and wind up being collected by the containment boom at Stanford Ave. We have to work together to not just clean litter up but to prevent it from ever becoming litter in the first place. Together, we can work as one community and team to keep our roadways clean and our canals and waterways pristine – helping to create a strong quality of place throughout East Baton Rouge Parish and building a better Baton Rouge in the process.
Over the past several months, our Open Data BR team has been working to make enhancements to our Baton Rouge Police Department crime incident data available for public access on our open data portal. If you access our crime incident data regularly, you may have noticed before that some ZIP code data for incidents may have been missing, which makes it difficult for internal and external users to quickly hone in on areas where certain types of crime are occurring. Through the power of #GIS, we’re now able to automatically populate the correct ZIP code for every BRPD crime incident that is reported, as well as add the Metro Council district in which the incident occurred and the relevant crime prevention district, if applicable. These new attributes will allow users to easily filter or sort crime incident records by ZIP code, council district, and crime prevention district to better understand crime trends and activity in our community. Take a look at our crime incident dataset on Open Data BR and learn more about how we’re using #opendata to improve and create a safer Baton Rouge for all: https://bit.ly/2rTARMo
