ULS elementary Cubs reveled in the end of the another great year at the Elementary Students Celebrating Success assembly last week. Students who earned academic recognition throughout the year were once again recognized, and all elementary students celebrated the school's current number one ranking for American Heart Association fundraising. The event closed with a battle for the elementary spirit stick, which was won by Kindergarten, and a dance off for all students, faculty and staff! Special guest was long-time ULS Coach Burke Broussard, who was recognized as a ULS heart hero. Coach Broussard's presence allowed students to understand their fundraising affects thousands of people throughout the country but also many in right here in the ULS community. Top fundraisers presented a “fundraising check” to American Heart Association Youth Market Director Melissa Mitchell. This year’s top fundraisers were Caliway Goodson, Jameson Whitfield, De Lis Walvoord, Hannah Burke, Jack Benson, Rent Babin, Kate Nichols, Emery McCandless, Ava Randolph, Patrick Patton, Kennedi Walker, Dylan Kojis, and Alexander Williams. Congratulations also to the more than 80 student AHA fundraisers who earned the privilege to "pie" Coach Applegate, Coach Gremillion, and Mrs. Broussard with whipped cream. It was a messy but fun experience for all! To all elementary Cubs, have a great summer! See you in August!

Guest speaker was LSU Gymnastics Coach D-D Breaux. Breaux shared several success stories from her storied 41-year career as a head coach at LSU and provided sage advice to the graduates as they look forward to college and begin their next steps in life independent from their families. The UHS Senior Singers, as is tradition, performed "You Raise Me Up" and then led the audience in singing the UHS Alma Mater. Coach Breaux even joined in! Student Body President Faith Kwentua served as mistress of ceremonies.

ULS third graders have been "angling" to have the best fish tale to tell. Fishing is an annual and much anticipated part of the ULS elementary P.E. program. Earlier this month, students met with Wildlife and Fisheries Agent Sergeant T.J. Ashley who instructed the future fishermen on the 4-wrap knot technique to tie a hook to a fishing line and the anatomy of a cricket for baiting purposes. He also discussed fishing safety. Last week, 3rd graders began putting their new catch and release skills to the test at the LSU Lakes. Some have caught big fish. Some have caught small fish, and some have caught no fish at all, but everyone is enjoying the great outdoors!
