On the day Leonardo di Caprio’s won his first Oscar, here’s a Titanic themed tennis story for a Monday morning… And if you read on, the story shows what can be achieved in the face of adversity :) This is the story of two elite tennis players, Karl Behr and Dick Williams who met each other for the second time on the tennis court in much happier circumstances than their first meeting. The first time these two tennis players met was on the Carpathia, after they were both rescued from the terrible tragedy that was the sinking of the Titanic. Behr has boarded the Titanic alongside his future wife Helen Newsome and her parents. When the Titanic struck an ice-berg, Helen and her parents boarded a lifeboat along with the Titanic’s owner Bruce Ismay. There was a women and children first policy; however Behr was requested by Ismay to help row the lifeboat which was half empty. Meanwhile, Williams had boarded the ship with his father, with plans to emigrate to America, and for Williams’ mother to join them out there later. When the Titanic struck the ice-berg, Williams and his father helped passengers into lifeboats. After the last lifeboat had been launched, Williams and his father went up to the Captains Bridge where one of the Titanic’s four giant funnels collapsed, crushing Williams’ father in front of him. Williams was devastated, but with his survival instinct still intact, he jumped into the icy cold Atlantic Ocean where he managed to pull himself into a collapsible lifeboat which had not yet been assembled. With people desperately clamouring aboard, the freezing cold water filled the lifeboat to waist deep. It took nearly six hours for help to come; by which time all but 11 in Williams’ water filled lifeboat had died. The water was so icy cold that by the time help arrived, Williams had lost all feeling in his legs, after turning purple with lack of circulation and frostbite. After the Carpathia arrived on the scene to help, Williams was told by the ship's doctor that his legs must be amputated. However, Williams refused and literally walked his legs back to life by pacing the ships decks despite the extreme discomfort. Aboard the Carpathia is where the two tennis player survivors met for the first time, and Williams said that Behr had showed him great kindness. It was three months later when the pair met again as rivals on the tennis court in a Boston tournament where Behr beat Williams. After almost having his legs amputated, Williams went on to win the Wimbledon doubles, and both men were instated into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
