Training a dog. There are many different methods available for training a dog. Providing they are used correctly with an ample amount of patience and consistency they will all work. Pack Leader theories are no longer relevant or recommended. We must consider how a dog is feeling within the training environment; a fearful, anxious or over excited dog is less likely to learn as much as a dog that has few distractions. How a dog thinks affect's how they feel and this in turn will dictate their behaviour. It's not what you say to a dog that's important. Everything you do with or around a dog will be noticed by them and could cause confusions, it is very easy to train undesirable behaviour without realising. Something as simple as telling a dog off can lead to unwanted behaviour, so it's vital to only reward good behaviour. A dog is more likely to repeat a behaviour they are rewarded for. Any confusions create questions and stress. Common signs of stress include; excessive barking (front door, back door or garden), licking or chewing, pulling on lead, lunging, digging/scrapping, hiding, drooling, and even excitement upon your return from a walk or when you first come home (anxiety release). Please seek positive behavioural advice with any unwanted behaviour. Hope this helps. Bill ConnorsLegacy Gibson
