Today is #worldteachersday so we're featuring this 1964 portrait of Richard Austen Butler ('Rab') by Allan Gwynne-Jones. Elected to an Honorary Fellowship of Pembroke in 1941, Butler was responsible, as President of the Board of Education, for the 1944 Education Act. This Act harnessed the post-war desire for national unity and social reform to shape a more equal education system and increase access to education, enabling free secondary education for all children. You can read the Second Reading of the bill here http://ow.ly/J7bt304S2MP and the Bill as it was enacted here http://ow.ly/EbO8304S2YZ Butler went on to have a remarkable political career, holding the positions of Chancellor of the Exchequer, Leader of the House of Commons, Home Secretary, Deputy Prime Minister, and Foreign Secretary.
