Family Practice @ MSMC Update on taking new patients. The clinic is being flooded with calls, emails, messages, etc asking if the family medicine service will be taking new patients. This seems to be a result of apparent changes in physician services for Green Bay in the upcoming months. Unfortunately we are not taking any new family medicine patients at this time. In fact we already have over 3000 on a wait list. Please call the Green Bay Medical Clinic 709.673.3867 if you have other questions about this matter. We continue to accept new patients to our occupational health, Addictions medicine, and chronic pain Services. Appointments can also be scheduled through our virtual clinic at Medicuro.ca

Caring for your immune system Harvard University says ‘Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can take toward naturally keeping your immune system strong and healthy. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these: Don't smoke. Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables. Exercise regularly. Maintain a healthy weight. If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation. Get adequate sleep. Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly. Try to minimize stress. Plan to protect your body’s defence system. The devaluing of nursing - A critical mistake! Opinion Post - Dr. Todd Young This week I listened to Debbie Forward, president of the nurses union in NL talk about proposed changes to the skill mix of palliative care and the negative impact on her members. She has long been an advocate for her profession. As I listened and watched her speak, I sensed fatigue, dismay, and exhaustion as she fights for what appears to be happening - the devaluing of nursing. Nursing is critical to our health care system. Our system is broken. It’s workforce, the majority of care providers who are nurses, have found themselves working under conditions where so called health care leaders are constantly trying to find ways to replace nurses, change their role, devalue them etc. It must be a tough time working as a nurse. The devaluing of nursing is a global phenomena that is concerning researchers abroad. Studies show a team based approach to health care produces the best outcomes. Perhaps if as much effort and money was spent empowering nurses, valuing their role in caring for our citizens, taxpayers would benefit more. Perhaps our health care system would be stronger. By devaluing the pillar of our health care system, you destabilize the quality of heath care to everyone. At MSMC, we have one of two RN’s (baccalaureate trained) as part of our primary care/ family medicine team everyday. They are critical to the services we offer. They bring professionalism and an advanced skill set to primary care. They are valued! Florence Nightingale once said, ‘The greatest heroes are those who do their duty in the daily grind of domestic affairs whilst the world whirls as a maddening dreidel.’

Advocacy post ... would we deny our diabetics insulin? Opioid use disorder (aka narcotic addiction) is affecting every community in our province. Our youth, many working adults, people of all walks of life are having their dignity, life's purpose, and sense of self destroyed by opioids. No addict wants to be an addict. In order to have an addict successfully transition from user to recovery, studies support the use of Methadone or Suboxone as harm deduction strategies. Basically, it saves lives. Without it opioid addiction will lead to hospital, jail, or grave. We are talking about someones son, daughter, wife, husband, or best friend. Pharmacies play a critical role in the transition process. Pharmacist are highly skilled community oriented professionals. Today a man visited MSMC and treatment was started. It takes him 10 minutes to walk to his community pharmacy. When contacted the pharmacist said he could not take him and really couldn't 'be bothered'. The nearest pharmacy we could find for him was a 45 minute drive from his home. In Labrador City, there are 3 local pharmacies. Opioid addiction is negatively impacting the community. People being treated for opioid addiction have to drive 30 minutes each way to Fermont, Quebec to access treatment. Every pharmacy in Newfoundland and Labrador who does not dispense Methadone and Suboxone will readily fill prescriptions of Percocets, Oxycontin, etc sometimes in very large amounts. It is time that people suffering opioid addiction have fair and equal access to treatment known to save lives, decrease crime rates, make our communities safer, reduction in infectious diseases such as Hepatitis C, improve their quality of life, better chance at long-term recovery success, and improve overall social functioning! If a pharmacy would 'never' consider refusing to dispense a diabetic insulin, or a patient with angina nitro spray, or for that matter anyone a life saving medication, WHY is it okay to deny those suffering an opioid addiction a life saving treatment... IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE if we are truly serious about addressing the opioid crisis. Dr. Todd Young Main Street Medical Clinic - Springdale, NL 'Your Journey to Wellness Begins Here...'
