ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AUTHENTICATION OF DOCUMENTS IN CANADA Apostille is an official stamp, international treaty or certificate that specifies the process of authenticating documents issued by a designated authority in a contracting state to the Hague Convention. It is an international certification that can be compared with notarization. This implies that a document having an Apostille stamp on it will be legal for use in every other country that has signed the Apostille treaty. Can I get Apostille in Canada? As Canada is not a contracting state to Hague convention, it is not possible to get an Apostille for Canadian public documents rather, Canadian documents or certificates need to be authenticated and legalized by the concerned authority for it to be regarded as genuine. The term authentication stands for the verification of the genuineness of a signature or document, to make it valid. Authentication of document in Canada can only be done at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) located in Ottawa. The process takes about 15 to 25 business days and once satisfied, the foreign affairs will put their stamp and signature on the document and by so doing, will confirm the authority of a public official like a commissioner of oaths or a notary public. For instance, if you need a marriage certificate authentication in Canada, all you need do is to submit your request for a Statement In Lieu of Certificate of Non -Impediment to Marriage Abroad either in person or by mail. Legalization on the other hand is the confirmation of the authenticity of a foreign public document or certificate by a competent consular official of the state in which the document is to be used. Every country possesses its own legalization specifications which depend on the type of document to be legalized as well as its intended use. The moment the consulate is contented that the authentication was legitimate, and that the appropriate procedures were implemented, they attach their legalization seal to the authenticated paper or document. It is important to note that the procedures of authentication and legalization from foreign affairs and the consulate do not validate the content of the document, only the authority of the public official that previously signed the document. Can we say Apostille, authentication and legalization are the same? Yes. When you have your document authenticated and legalized, it is an equivalent of an Apostille. Apostille will make your document valid for legal purposes in all other signatory countries while authentication and legalization will make your document valid for official purposes only in the country of which the consulate has legalized the document. At Legalization Service Centre, we understand that authentication of documents in Canada can be confusing as well as time consuming. To make the whole process hassle free for you, Legalization Service Centre will assist you from the start to finish with every of your international document needs.

Fingerprints authentication in Canada goes by many different names however, what you are looking for is an official document that records any convictions on your criminal record.
