Little bit of bush ingenuity today. This one was sprung on me at last minute. With some help from an obliging client and some scrap steel we fabricated up a bushman's hospital plate for a subsolar abscess. Sometimes functional and pretty are not synonymous!

Quick progress update on the dorsal resection case from 5 months back. The mare has continued to respond incredibly well to both the owner, vet and farrier involvment. Just goes to highlight the importance of a team effort.

The banana shoes - continued. QH mare diagnosed with navicular lesions and presenting grade 3/5 lame bilaterally. Sore upon palpation of both the DC and check ligaments. After consultation with the owner it was decided we would apply a set of banana (see; rocker, roller shoe etc). Although in obvious pain, we got the first set on and the mare improved dramatically. Throughout the cycle the mare has continued to improve to the stage where no lameness is now evident and she is returning to light work with a view towards rehabilitation of some kind of riding career.

All in a weeks work! Love my job!

What started as a floating accident eventuated into full blown necrosis of the dorsal lamellae warranting resection. The attending vet had done a wonderful job of the initial resection following radiographic evaluation, leaving little for me to do but apply a positive pressure heartbar with rolled toe and strategically placed clips. The aim of the shoeing is to reduce axial flexion within the capsule in order to stabilize the stressed coronary dermis and facilitate healing. The long term prognosis is a positive one with the continued teamwork of owner, vet and farrier.

Some before and afters. Shoes were on for a standard 5 weeks. It's a pleasure, and one of the highlights of my career, when I get to work with skilled and ethical trainers.
