"One of the unique things about the Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis (ITS-Davis) is the level of engagement at the interface of science and policy. I would encourage students to look at how engineering programs connect to governing bodies to affect change." College of Engineering Spring Distinguished Lecture Wednesday, April 11, 2018, 10 AM Student Community Center, Multipurpose Room All are welcome. Reception to follow. “Proteins at Interfaces: From Microfiltration to Enzyme Hydrolysis” Michael R. Ladisch is a distinguished professor of agricultural and biological engineering and director of the Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering at Purdue University. He also holds an appointment in Purdue’s Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. His research addresses the transformation of renewable resources into biofuels and bioproducts, bioseparations and food pathogen detection, all of which involve the core area of proteins at interfaces. In 1999, Ladisch was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. In 2008, he was recognized by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers as one of 100 engineers guiding the profession into the new century. This week’s #FeatureFriday is Brandon Ng, a fourth year biomedical engineering major with a passion for ultimate frisbee. Brandon started playing ultimate frisbee when he took a PE class his sophomore year at UC Davis. Since then, he’s been hooked. He plays as often as he can, sometimes squeezing in thirty minutes of throwing in between classes. Brandon also plays intramurals and the occasional pickup game. He loves learning new throwing techniques, like hammers, scoobers and the “World’s Greatest.” Brandon is also an avid rock climber. He works at the UC Davis ARC Wall and regularly competes in climbing competitions. Both of these sports contribute to Brandon’s interest in biomedical engineering. He is specializing in biomechanics and focusing on how people’s bodies move, particularly when playing sports. He hopes to be able to continue both of these sports after he graduates in the spring. If you are an engineering major, or if you know one who does something really cool and interesting, tag them in this post or contact us for a chance to be featured! Two years ago, four UC Davis undergraduate engineering students hatched a plan to address water issues in a small Peruvian village, La Huaylla. Partnering with Engineering Without Borders, the students created a comprehensive five-year plan focused on assessing the environment, implementing designs, educating the community, and providing upkeep. The engineering is the easy part, said Nicolas Dante Dilliott, a fourth year civil engineering student and Blum Center for Developing Economies Fellow. "The hard part is managing all your stakeholders and communicating what you are actually doing. And you can't learn that in class."
