Hear Southern Poverty Law Center’s Lecia Brooks discuss “The State of Hate and Extremism” as part of the Hate Has No Home at UMass campaign on Monday, Oct. 2, from 5-7 p.m. in the Bernie Dallas Room in Goodell Hall. The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of a campaign reaffirming the university’s core values and its commitment to ensuring a safe and welcoming living and learning environment for every member of the campus community. The Southern Poverty Law Center is the leading nonprofit U.S. organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists. There, Brooks leads outreach efforts on key initiatives and social justice issues and she frequently gives presentations around the country to promote tolerance and diversity. http://bit.ly/2fHqCYn

"If You Want to Be Happy, Be Grateful: The Life and Teachings of Brother David Steindl-Rast," the 19th annual fall reception of the UMass Amherst Libraries, celebrates the life and work of Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk who has shared a worldwide message of peace, interfaith dialog, social justice, and environmental stewardship. Brother David has donated his archives to the Libraries’ Special Collections. The event is free and open to all. February 23, 2018 is the 150th birthday of W.E.B. Du Bois. To kick off "150 Days of Du Bois," the UMass Amherst Library gave away 500 copies of Du Bois's book, "The Souls of Black Folk" at the Library on Wednesday.

Sweltering heat and humidity earlier in the week didn't keep the 300+ members of the University of Massachusetts Minuteman Marching Band from their tough preparation for Saturday's football halftime show and fifth-quarter post-game performance. Kickoff is at 3:30 pm. After the game, the band will board buses for the Collegiate Marching Band Festival in Allentown, Pennsylvania. And exactly three months later, they'll be marching down Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California as a featured band in the 2018 Rose Parade. Go UMass!
