We'd like to wish a big Liverpool Philharmonic welcome to our new Associate Principal Horn, Stephen Nicholls! Originally from Cork, Stephen began the horn at the age of 10 under Sean Clinch at the Cork School of Music, going on to win numerous competitions, and becoming a proud member of the Cork and National Youth Orchestras. After touring extensively with the European Union Youth Orchestra, he was appointed Second Horn of the Irish Chamber Orchestra alongside his varied freelance career, which included appearances as Guest Principal Horn with London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra to name just a few. We were one of the first professional orchestras he had the privilege to work with, and we're all so excited for him to now join us full time!

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Oboist Jonathan Small joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Jonathan came to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra from Scottish Opera in 1984 and has enjoyed playing in the woodwind section for a long list of top conductors in concerts, tours and recordings. He values especially the orchestra's work with Libor Pesek, Vernon Handley, Sir Charles Mackerras and most recently of course Andrew Manze and Vasily Petrenko. Jonathan says: "I think when the time comes to put my oboe away I'll always be immensely proud of the Orchestra's long and wide-ranging list of recordings, which will carry our achievements far into the future." "We musicians are so very fortunate to live and make music here in Liverpool, such a wonderful musical city!" In addition to playing with the Phil, Jonathan has taught the oboe at the RNCM for over 25 years, is Guest Professor of Oboe at Central Conservatory in Beijing, China, and has also developed a side career as a conductor. His most recent concert was here at the Phil, conducting the Alpine Symphony by Strauss. Huge congratulations to Jonathan for reaching such a milestone!
