A good show of Calves forward for the Special Christmas Show which was kindly sponsored by SWLF, Michael Hoyle & Co and Oakhill Vets. Judge Mr John Roebuck did a fantastic job. Today saw a lot of Continentals with the top price a Limousin Bull Calf realising £462. Nice Charolais Heifer Calves sold to £290.00 A busy day, thank you for everyone’s patience throughout the day, vendors were rewarded with prices on the up compared to last week. There was also a great show of lambs this year which were a credit to the farmers, all classes were of good quality. It was a brilliant pen of Beltex lambs topping the prize list at Clitheroe Auction Mart’s Christmas Show and Sale on the 5th December, judged by Mr George Cropper. The Champion pen came from Fox Farms of Clitheroe weighing 45.5kg and making 264ppkg totalling £120. The Reserve Champion went to P M Ashburner, Great Harwood for 4 super Texel lambs selling to £96. Trade was still good throughout with all grades keenly contested. Very smart lambs still remain good to sell. More heavier lambs forward, these met a strong trade selling to a high of £96 from J R Douglas. Nice handy weight commercial lambs generally sold between £73.50 and £78. Overall Lamb SQQ average 177.04ppkg and overall average 175.51ppkg. A smaller entry of Ewes forward. Trade was very good. There was most definitely a shortage of stronger Ewes. Texels sold to £92.50, Gritstones made £68.50. A lot more Rams these topped at £111.50 for Suffolks. Ewes averaged £60.38, Rams averaged £68.82. It was brilliant British Blues topping the prize list at Clitheroe Auction Mart’s Christmas Show and Sale, judged by Mr Gary Rowles from, G Rowles Butchers Longridge. The judge awarded the championship to a British Blue Heifer bred by R Nutter, Higham, weighing 485kg which was later bought for 285ppkg the judge himself to use at local butchers in Longridge. The same butchers purchased the Reserve Champion, a British Blue Heifer from K D Whitwell, Paythorne, weighing 505kgs and sold at 300ppkg. The day’s top priced cull cow was a British Blue Cow shown by T W Pickard & Son, weighing 700kg and making 176ppkg, selling to A Sanderson. Auctioneer, Joe Worthington, commented “We had an exceptional show of cattle today. Overall trade was very good with lots of cattle selling well over the £2 per kilo mark.”
