Did you know? There were 11 whole days in 1752 that never actually existed! Up until 1753, Britain used the Julian Calender which consisted on 365.25 days . It was fractionally too long and, over time, fell out of line with the seasions. In 1752, Britain abandoned this calender for a new one (which we used to day) meaning that 3rd September instantly became 13th September therefore... ...Nothing whatsoever happened in British history between 3 and 13 September 1752. Those 11 days are completely missing from history! #factoftheday #alwayslearning

Ever wondered why you had to take your Christmas decorations down on the 5th January?! Long ago people believed that tree-spirits lived in the greenery (holy, ivy etc) they decorated their houses with. The greenery was brought into the house to provide a safe haven for the tree-spirits during the harsh midwinter days. Once this period was over it was necessary to return the the tree-spirits into the countryside once again. Failure to do this would mean that vegetation would not be able to start growing again. It was also thought that, if you left the greenery in the house, the tree-spirits would cause mischief in the house until they were released! So remember to take your Christmas tree down tonight if you don't want those pesky tree-spirits playing tricks on you! #factoftheday #alwayslearning
