CARES
Description
CARES (Cancer Assessment Rapid Early Support) is a charity that aims to increase Cancer survival rates through support, screening and early reporting. ‘The objective of the charity is to improve survival rates by raising awareness of the importance of Cancer screening and early reporting, to help provide the people of East Lancashire in particular, but not exclusively, the facilities, support services and equipment to make Cancer diagnosis more readily accessible, enabling quicker treatment.’
Our initial aim is to provide the equipment for a new Endoscopy Unit that is being built at the Burnley General Hospital. We have been working alongside the East Lancashire Health Trust to ensure that this is the area that will most directly help us achieve our goal of saving more lives through early assessment and diagnosis of Cancer.
In addition to supporting the ELHT in opening the new Endoscopy unit, we are also looking to open a new assessment centre in Burnley, so that people who suspect they have Cancer can ‘drop in’ to discuss their symptoms and if necessary be quickly referred for further diagnosis.
A key cornerstone of CARES is that money raised locally stays local to that community, so the money that is raised by the people of East Lancashire directly benefits them. That does not mean we don’t have big ambitions for the charity though. Once we have built a successful model in Burnley and East Lancashire, we would look to roll out the model nationwide and potentially globally.
