The Burn Scotland
Description
Official Facebook page for The Burn. The Burn is a charity that provides unique academic and homely retreats to groups from around the world. The Burn is the name of a small estate at the foot of Glenesk containing an attractive Georgian mansion house that was originally built for General Lord Adam Gordon between 1791 and 1796. During the intervening years the house and grounds were steadily extended until, in the 1930s, the house was completely remodelled and modernised by Mr George Herbert Russell.
At the start of the Second World War, Mr and Mrs Russell offered their home to the war effort and The Burn became a military convalescent home. Their son, James, was killed in action in 1944, aged just 21 and because of the tragedy the Russells never returned to The Burn. In 1949 the house and its extensive grounds alongside the river North Esk was gifted to to the Dominion Students Hall Trust in memory of James and it is still supporting student activities as Mr and Mrs Russell had intended.
Today The Burn has the capacity to hold 50 people in the mansion house and a further 11 in the adjacent courtyard houses. As well as what it offers students, The Burn is perfectly situated for anyone wishing to enjoy the striking scenery of the Highlands, the nearby golf links or some salmon fishing, all while based in a relaxing and welcoming home away from home.
The Burn is a great place to celebrate and is now a popular venue for family reunions, birthday parties, dinners and weddings. We are licenced for marriages and can provide a full range of hotel services to make every event a special occasion.
