IN THIS WEEK'S CHRONICLE... New life is being breathed into a vacant property in the heart of Gilford, which will see the former Royal British Legion hall undergoing a major transformation - into a church. Work on the meeting house, which will be known as Christ Encounters Tabernacle, is well underway, with the official opening scheduled for Friday, May 5. It’s literally quite a conversion for the building, which used to be a popular social and community venue, hosting charity evenings, functions and boxing tournaments, before it closed at the end of 2014. Banbridge man, Ian McKinney, showed off his general knowledge prowess when he took top spot in the TV quiz show ‘Fifteen to One’. Ian, a past student of Banbridge Academy and Oxford graduate, appeared in Monday’s episode of the popular Channel 4 show, hosted by Sandi Toksvig. Although now living in Birmingham, where he works in the insurance industry, Ian still has family connections in Banbridge, with his parents Colin and Dinah from the Newry Road.

The staff and directors of Houstons are delighted to support the fabulous charity ‘Team Elsa’, which has captured the hearts and imagination of the Banbridge community. The Newry Street store will be holding a number of fundraising events over Easter, including a raffle and coffee morning, for Team Elsa and the Cancer Fund for Children. The public can help by either coming into the store and purchasing raffle tickets from any staff member, or going online to ‘JustGiving @ Houstons Children’s Cancer Fund’ and making a donation.

Dromore-based group Via Wings has secured £48,900 of Lottery funding in the People’s Projects competition. The charity and community enterprise will use the grant for its ‘Food for the Soul’ project, to fund a year-long catering and hospitality and work placement programme for young people and adults facing issues, including unemployment and learning disability.

Banbridge Musical Society’s production of Little Shop of Horrors wowed audiences at the IMC Theatre during its recent five-night run. There were standing ovations for the cast and praise for the fantastic set, costumes and props.

The RNIB NI’s ‘Best of Banbridge’ fashion show proved a stylish success when it took to the catwalk in the Belmont Hotel recently. The fabulous fashionable event, attended by an audience of over 200, has raised £4,000, with donations still coming in. Edenordinary Road mum Beverly Thom, whose son Lewis is visually impaired, was instrumental in organising the show, alongside Lewis’s classroom assistant at Ballydown PS, Wendy Elliott.
