Federation of Igbo Students
Description
This is an association or group that consist all the Igbo students in Bayero University Kano. The Federation of Igbo Students, Bayero University Kano Chapter is an organization embodying all Igbo-based cultural associations and students studying in Bayero University, Kano. Prior the formation of this association there existed in Bayero University Kano, individual State association such as Anambra State Students Association (ASSA), National Association of Imo/Abia Students (NAIAS), Enugu State Students Association (ESSA), and Association of Ebonyi State Students (AESS). These individual state associations flourished immensely until 2001, when a sharp reduction was noticed in the number of students offered provisional admission in BUK (in sub-degree, degree and post-graduate programs. As the years roll by, it became glaring that these individual state associations cannot be sustained due to the fact that the number of Igbo students offered admission is not corresponding to the large number of graduating Igbo Students, hence, our population diminished.
On the 25th of November, 2005, a meeting was called under auspices of the then president of National Association of Imo/Abia Students (NAIAS) – Mazi Nnodi Bruno D.C., the situation was reviewed and a communiqué which was signed by the then president of of Anambra State – Mazi Arinze Ofoneme; Enugu State – Mazi Chinekwu Ugbor; Ebonyi State – Mazi Paul Okorie; Imo/Abia – Mazi Nnodi Bruno was issued. The meeting agreed to set up a big body that will supersede every other Igbo-based association in BUK. A committee was introduced to that effect, chaired by Mazi Oliver Orajiaka to oversee the registration of the association by the students’ affairs department. As God would have it, two weeks after the inauguration, FEDERATION OF IGBO STUDENTS, BUK CHAPTER was born.
The association, since its birth, has been chaired by Mazi Nnodi Bruno, Mazi Stephen Nwaegbule, Mazi Chijioke Aroh, Mazi Chibueze Onwuekwe, Mazi Donatus Ubani, Mazi Michael Emeto and currently by Mazi Chamberlain Agbonye.
