Shelter City Maastricht presents an impressive photo exhibition by photographer Daniella van Bergen 'Human Right Defenders' in the Hall of the Faculty of LAW, from January 8 until the January 25, 2018 'Human rights defenders' Open on weekdays from 8:30 am to 9:00 pm Bouillonstraat 3, 6211 LH Maastricht Look through the eyes of photographer Daniella van Bergen and meet exceptional people who stand up in various places around the world against violations of rights and liberties. Because they were harassed and threatened they found a temporary shelter in Maastricht and nine other Dutch Shelter City cities. Far away from the danger, they spent 3 months in the city for the much needed rest, new knowledge and energy and an international network that will support them. The photo exhibition and Shelter City Network are an initiative of the Dutch human rights organization Justice and Peace. Kumbh Mela is one of the largest religious festival, and involves the pilgrimage of 100 million Hindus to a sacred river. Unfortunately, many of the previous versions of this event have been marred by accidents and deaths. Human crowds are complex systems and so predicting their behavior is challenging. However, the combination of computational modeling and data does offer ways in which crowds can be managed. Tuesday 16 January prof. Peter Sloot will give a lecture about complex systems. He will also talk about the Kumbh Mela experiment (a.o.) during which he and his team used sophisticated methods and algorithms to aid planners and event managers in managing extremely large crowds. https://www.facebook.com/events/1924183754501149/

De Commissie Studium Generale is namelijk op zoek naar een nieuw student-lid. Een student lid krijgt een stem in: • Het inhoudelijk meedenken over het programma van Studium Generale • Het meedenken over hoe de missie van het SG het beste kan worden gerealiseerd • Het geven van feedback (inhoudelijk, organisatorisch): dus ook activiteiten bijwonen • Het vervullen van een ambassadeursfunctie richting eigen achterban / faculteit • Het zorgen voor continuïteit in beleid • Het rapporteren van ontwikkelingen/activiteiten binnen haar/zijn faculteit • Het attenderen op ontwikkelingen in de wetenschap • Het bijwonen van de vergaderingen (6 tot 7 maal per jaar). Bij de samenstelling van de commissie wordt gestreefd naar een maximale spreiding over de verschillende wetenschapsgebieden. Een student-lid wordt benoemd voor een periode van één jaar. Hiervoor geldt een maal de mogelijkheid van een herbenoeming. De leden worden op persoonlijke titel en op grond van hun kwaliteiten en affiniteit met het Studium Generale aangewezen. Gezien de huidige samenstelling van de commissie geven wij voor deze vacature bij gelijke geschiktheid de voorkeur aan een vrouw. During the lecture of Tuesday 9 January Charles Foster will tell about the idea behind his efforts to “grope at extreme otherness”; to live for six weeks alongside badgers in a hill in Wales; or to snatch fish with his teeth like an otter or to be hunted by bloodhounds, as a deer.
