Description
Oude en nieuwe Maastrichtenaren ontmoeten elkaar rondom Carnaval. De Maastrichtse samenleving koestert haar gebruiken. Oude en nieuwe tradities kunnen naast elkaar bestaan. Die ruimte geeft men hier aan elkaar.
Dat maakt Maastricht een fijne stad om in te wonen, te leven en te bezoeken.
Carnaval is één van die tradities. Het ritueel van carnaval is opgebouwd uit vele gebeurtenissen: samenkomsten van mensen, in grotere en kleinere groepen, ook al in de aanloop naar ‘Vasteloavend’ toe. Samen kostuums maken, aan de wagens bouwen, samen muziek maken, eten en drinken.
Het motto van de Maastrichtse Vasteloavend is verbinden: door ‘Plezeer & Sjariteit’, door plezier en liefdadigheid. ‘Common Carnaval’ is een project door, voor en met inwoners van de stad Maastricht, vluchtelingen en nieuwkomers.
De vluchtelingen hebben niet alleen hun stad, dorp of huis moeten achterlaten.
Met hun vlucht lieten ze de voorwerpen, momenten en plekken achter die vorm gaven aan hun dagelijkse leven. maar ook de gezamenlijke rituelen: de grote en kleine feesten die met familie, vriendengroepen, buurten, steden of in het hele land gevierd werden.
Één van de peilers van de Meestrichter Geis waar de stad Maastricht zo trots op is, is de tolerante levensopvatting. Daarom willen wij carnaval, de voorbereidingen, de uiteindelijke optocht en het vieren erna als gelegenheid nemen om de vluchtelingen ‘welkom’ te heten. Wij willen hen ontmoeten en deel laten nemen aan onze gemeenschap.
Dit kunnen wij doen door onze rituelen rondom het carnaval met hen te delen, door hen uit te nodigen om samen de kostuums te maken, te bouwen aan objecten en een wagen en hen mee te laten lopen aan de optocht.
Carnaval vieren is een manier om op humorvolle, nieuwsgierige en respectvolle manier de maatschappij en de sociale rollen die een ieder vervult te bevragen. Wij richten in de lijn van het carnavaleske een tijdelijke carnavalsvereniging op. Een vereniging met een vluchteling-prins en een prinses die ‘ein vaan us’ is.
De raad van 11 zal bestaan uit een aantal jonge Maastrichtenaren, een aantal jonge kunstenaars in wording en een aantal jonge vluchtelingen. Op de weg naar zondag 7 februari doet deze raad van 11 met milde humor een poging alle inwoners van de stad met elkaar te verbinden.

Common Carnival!
Carnaval is one of (if not) the most powerful rituals known to our city.
Maastricht cherishes its customs. Both old and new traditions exist right next to one another. It's all a matter of giving each other space. This is what makes Maastricht a good city to live in, to live life in and to visit.
'Carnaval' is one of the oldest of these traditions. The ritual that culminates in the days of the carnaval festival is built from a wide variety of events: Gatherings of people, in large or small numbers, even when 'Vasteloavend' (the Limburgian name for Carnaval) is still just a date on the calendar we look forward to. Creating costumes, building a float, playing music, having food and drinks. We do all of these things together, as a group.
