Scream for joy – SBE students conduct marketing research to improve the ‘unboxing experience’ at Zalando In March 2018, Maastricht University had the pleasure of welcoming Christel Habig, Head of Warehouse Mönchengladbach, from Zalando as jury member for determining the best marketing research project (MRP) as part of the Marketing & Supply Chain Management course. This 2nd year IBE BSc course is aimed at discussing in an integrative manner how a supply chain makes available the products and services that marketers have promised to consumers. Marketing research is an essential first step for understanding customers demand and needs. The MRP therefore is an essential part of the course – within 7 weeks students learn about the principles of marketing research and get to design as well as implement full-blown marketing research to examine a Supply Chain Management (SCM)-related problem from a consumer point of view. The generated insights are then used to develop concrete and managerially relevant recommendations for optimising and streamlining SCM processes. This year’s managerial challenge came from Zalando: the European fashion online retailer is seeking for ideas to optimise their customers’ unboxing experience while, at the same time, decreasing SCM complexity during the pick-and-pack process in its warehouses. Christian Klein, Operations Manager Process Management, introduced the management challenge in the opening lecture of the course. Throughout the course, 33 student teams across 11 tutorial groups were busy with translating the management challenge into a researchable problem statement, identifying relevant research questions, developing an appropriate research design, collecting data by means of an online survey, analysing gathered data in SPSS, and interpreting the research results to formulate recommendations for Zalando.

“International Case Competition @ Maastricht: what’s it all about?” “This year will mark the eighth time that SBE will host the International Case Competition at Maastricht (ICC@M). During ICC@M week (27 April - 5 May), 16 universities from around the world will send teams of their best undergraduate students to Maastricht to compete in challenging business cases. But that’s not all! Besides the competition, there will be lots of social events, parties, and even a Spirit Cup for the most motivated and energetic team. Of course, since this is one of SBE’s biggest events, ICC@M can’t be put together without the work of a committed team. I am really happy to be part of this year’s organising committee. As Marketing & PR Manager, I am responsible for giving the event as much exposure as possible, and further strengthening the positive perception of ICC@M.” -- Theresa | 2nd year International Business #humansofsbe
