Summer holidays are the perfect time to create special memories for our children and it doesn’t have to cost much. Most people will say that their best childhood memories are of time spent with family and much of it in their own house or garden; camping with their cousins, water fights, or dancing around the living room. The sun was always warmer, the days longer and summer seemed to last for years. Time spent like this, with people who are close to them, gives children a real sense of belonging that supports them throughout their lives. And the benefit for the grown ups is that we get to relax too while the kids all occupy each other having the best of fun! Why not get together with family this summer for a barbeque or a day on the beach and start making those sweet childhood memories?

FUN IN THE SUN! At long last, the sun has started to make an appearance in the last few weeks. While this summer isn’t anywhere near as good as last year’s (we hoped, but didn’t really expect it would be), it’s not a total washout and there are some lovely sunny days and long summer evenings to enjoy. It’s holiday time! And whether it’s a staycation or you’re flying off to exotic locations, it’s important to remember to stay safe while you have fun in the sun! We all love the sun and because we tend to get so little of it here in Ireland, we like to make the most of it when the sun shines! But it’s so important to remember that the sun can be harmful. Too much sun can cause sun burn, sun allergy, premature skin aging and skin cancer, all of which we want to avoid if possible. Luckily that doesn’t mean staying indoors! If you take the right precautions you can still enjoy the good weather, while protecting yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. As Baz Luhrmann famously sang “Wear sunscreen! If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it”! Use sun protection, even on overcast days, as UV rays can penetrate the clouds. When out in the sun for long periods, wear a wide brimmed hat to shade your face, neck and ears, a long-sleeved top, trousers or long skirts that don’t let the sun through and sunglasses to protect your eyes too. Most importantly, remember children’s delicate skin needs even more protection from the sun, so keep them covered up, in the shade and use a high factor SPF to keep the little ones safe. Finally, our last bit of advice is to reduce screen time this summer – put those phones away for a while and enjoy some quality family fun time in the sun!

My mother always advised me “don’t worry about what you’re wearing, put a big smile on your face and that’s all anyone will notice!” I never really believed her but looking back now I should probably have given her more credit. We should never underestimate the power of a smile. It’s one of the first skills babies learn, endearing everyone to them. If you smile while exercising, you not only enjoy it more, you’re also less likely to get an injury (apparently you can’t damage relaxed muscles). And you can even hear someone smiling when on the phone. Nurses instinctively know that being cheerful and upbeat around your patients, helps to lift their mood and speed up their recovery. But did you know that the simple act of smiling can hugely benefit your own health and happiness? Releasing a stream of feel-good neurotransmitters — dopamine, endorphins and serotonin — when that smile flashes across your face, it not only makes you feel more relaxed, it can also lower your heart rate and blood pressure. And smiling is infectious – when you smile, others smile back. That’s the magic of a smile! Why not give it a go today? Just smile! 😀
