So now that the final curtain has fallen, the final dressing room has been abandoned. The last actor & performer has moved on and the cast and crew have had a good nights sleep without panicking, I feel a need to digest: Laochra Gael for me has been a roller coaster and one very tough gig that I have actually loved. Being asked to transcribe Alan O Neill's labour of love to a stage format has been the toughest and most rewarding of tasks I have done to date (and I have done a few). Not only staying true historically but staying true to the writers beliefs, I hope I have done it justice. This was never a production to rival 'waiting for godot' it was always for me and Alan going to be a rememberance. The production was cast with passion and delivered in simplicity. I believe you don't need elaborate sets to paint a true picture. By the way we did actually paint a picture (literally) on stage. Our job/my job was to evoke a mental picture and stir emotions through mood and provocation and by carefully crafted word (and a lot of shouting) I think we got our message out there. No theatre was ever less than 80% full at anytime and with the inclusion of our brilliant Kidz In Theatre no eye was left dry. A huge thanks to our musicians for delivering passion and emotion alongside our cast for performing with heart night after night in rememberance. Our tireless crew and advisors for listening, helping and for just being there. Many thanks to everyone who provided a space to rehearse or ironed a shirt, families who sacrificed personal time or drove a vehicle, we owe you a debt. And lastly and not finally I would like to thank Alan O Neill for entrusting me with his passion and words. We fought, we shouted and sometimes never spoke, friendships are built to last but respect is earned and not one person involved has left without mine, through it all we delivered a work that people came to see and boy did they come in their droves...and that's theatre! My sincerest thanks to everyone. Always in theatre Michael Anthony x
