Laban Dance Centre, Deptford, London by Herzog and De Meuron, Stirling Prize 2003. An enigmatic shed from the outside that catches the eye as light is made manifest in absorbing color shifts, light is both trapped and reflected across its giant sheet skin, a continuous floating membrane. Inside lies a sloping street that carves its way through the cavernous interior exposing its users like so many shopfronts on a shopping street. A playful handrail guides you every step of the way giving dancers a grip rail and a cue to spontaneously stretch and move as the mood takes them.

Photos of the interior from October 2007 juxtaposed with October 2017, wherein heroic work is being carried out to conserve this important and forgotten Dublin palazzo dating from circa 1753. Credit to Ian Lumley and Pat Wigglesworth for sharing with us their important work on the house.
