PM for more details. I've been teaching drums for the best part of 18 years in various forms. But teaching seriously and with a full time goal only over the past 4-5 years.
I have in that time developed what I believe is a brand new teaching philosophy in the drumming world. I have merged the two main worlds my skill set has been based around. (being pipe band drumming, and drum set drumming)
I am teaching what I believe are the keys to unlocking the drumming vocabulary and in the process making it an easier and more organic learning facility for my pupils.
My particular teaching style had in the past been affectionately compared to that of a martial arts master by a number of my pupils. When I took A moment to think about this, I realised that the relationship between the art and discipline behind anything which takes time and patience to master could indeed be compared to each other.
I have been using this idea as one of my primary teaching tools for years and hadn't really considered it in such detail before. By my reckoning I have personally used my own emotional response to the mastery of drumming to help me perfect every other non drumming related skill.
I then researched the term Kung Fu and found that our western idea has been depicted by Hollywood and the term Kung Fu literally means to become a master of something. (It was Hollywood that decided it was a name of the Chinese Martial Art.)
Therefor you may achieve Kung Fu in whatever your chosen field may be.
At this point I felt as if the universe was resonating at my frequency and I decided to name my new venture Kung Fu Drumming.
From here my concept has really began to refine itself. I chose a simple effective logo that is certainly recognisable as the combination of drumming and martial arts. I try to portray a philosophical view point and remain relatively impartial as I teach. Instead referring to the great Bruce Lee's teaching mantra.....
"A good teacher protects his pupils from his own influence".
"A teacher is never a giver of truth, he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself".
I hope that through Kung Fu Drumming I can improve the level of drumming in my pupils through the process of thoughtfulness and mindfulness. And in doing so create a community of curious minded, free thinking musicians who can express themselves in a creative, considerate and ultimately musical manner.
Kung Fu Drumming is formless and without limitation. It promotes thought, movement and expression. It is to drumming what Jeet Kune Do is to martial arts.
For me personally Kung Fu Drumming represents the culmination of a life's work. Which I hope can enrich the lives whomever it resonates with.
