This month, our Little Interview features two Italian interns that the Glucksman is hosting under the ETN Training Vision Ireland programme, Umberto De Martino and Marco Rizzi. Their responses are sure to bring a smile to your face! What are you reading? Just finished The Martian and started reading 1984 by George Orwell after I recently found it for cheap. (Umberto) I have just started reading Walden written by Henry David Thoreau. (Marco) Favourite museum? “Galleria dell’Accademia” in Florence. It’s full of beautiful sculptures but I would also love to go to “Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum” in New York. (Umberto) I loved “Museo del Novecento” in Milan. It was amazing! (Marco) Best performance? Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. (Umberto) Bruno Mars and Beyonce performing at the Superbowl in 2016. (Marco) What is your most treasured possession? My walking boots, they have been with me on a lot of adventures. (Umberto) It is a gift my grandmother gave to my mother the day I was born. It is a craft work of needle and thread in which are printed my name, the date and the hour I was born. (Marco) What work(s) of art inspire you? I found the look of the Girl with a pearl Earring very hypnotizing. (Umberto) I was astonished by the concept behind Merda d’autore by Piero Manzoni and Concetto spaziale (Attesa) by Lucio Fontana. (Marco) A lightbulb moment? Last year I met an old man on the mountains and we quickly became friends. He is a very wise man and he always has an interesting story to tell from which you can always learn something. (Umberto) Coming here to Ireland made me realize a lot of things.. (Marco) Guilty pleasure? Come on…… who doesn’t like Nutella (Umberto) Garlic Bread. Don’t tell that to Italian people! (Marco) What would you like to be doing right now? Being in space would be pretty cool. (Umberto) Performing again with my ex-school drama group. It would be fantastic! The Direct Provision community is often kept on the periphery of society, never really having the opportunity to fully integrate with their locality as they wait in a state of limbo. The centres are situated in locations that aren’t very visible and the residents stories largely go untold. Having had the opportunity to get to know the group of wonderfully talented young people involved in the Glucksman’s 2016 Navigating the Urban Landscape project, we were anxious that they be welcomed back to the museum to build on the skills learned and experiences gained. We were particularly keen for their creativity to be shared with as wide an audience as possible and began thinking that a public artwork in a city centre location would bring these teenagers talents to a whole new audience. In turn it would provide the group with the opportunity to share a little about their personal stories and current situations. For these young people as they enter some of their most formative years, we felt it was important that their unique personal journeys be brought out from the margins and into the public’s view. The teenagers have been welcomed back to the Glucksman for six art making sessions led by project artists Claire Coughlan and Helen O’Keeffe and invited artists The Project Twins and Fiona Kelly to explore both individual and collaborative artmaking techniques in a variety of mediums. The teenagers are being encouraged to develop their own creative processes and skills for visual communication in a positive and friendly atmosphere. With a focus initially on personal journeys and visual storytelling, the teenagers have begun to direct the sessions and began looking at ideas of identity and misperceptions. All these ideas and topics will be revealed in different forms on the large scale mural. This Culture Night Friday 22nd September in Fitzgerald’s Park the large scale mural will be unveiled to the public and will remain on view for just over two months. An exhibition of the artworks the teenagers created with the Project Twins and Fiona Kelly will go on display in the Glucksman Foyer and will run from Friday 22nd September to Sunday October 8th.

For Marcel Dinahet, the sea is both the site of his work and the source of inspiration. He began submerging his sculptures in the early 1990s before stopping making three–dimensional work altogether. His films here mark this point of transition, capturing these inert, underwater objects in their final resting places, abandoned to the test of time. Currently on show at the Glucksman as part of Now Wakes the Sea.
