Laboratoriet
Description
Laboratoriet began in 2005 at the open venue Entré Scenen (and later, at the dance venue Bora Bora) in Aarhus, Denmark. Since 2013, we are an independent o At Laboratoriet, an experiment is a combined sequence of questions, practise and reflexion.
In a nutshell: One or more carefully defined questions set the frame of the experiment. Then one or more actions, tests, and practical try-outs are performed, to enter into the field of investigation and bring you closer to possible answers to your questions. After the try-outs, reflection and adjusting of the investigation takes you to the next step. Of course, the individual experiment is not always such a clear-cut process throughout, but we strive to use this way of thinking as a steering tool, a basic frame.
Within this frame, an experiment can be about developing tools and ideas for a concrete artistic project, and it can be pure research into process and methods without a specific work in mind.
It is important to know who the experiment leader is - the chief analyst. Who is conducting the experiment, and who are the guinea pigs? What are the central questions, and what are the secondary ones, or the spin-off results from the main focus? There are sure to be many - but not everyone can be conducting the experiment at the same time, and no one can experiment with everything at all levels at the same time. Focus is crucial.
An experiment at Laboratoriet differs from a residency in that it is less free, when it comes to the content of the work period, and usually quite short - 1 or 2 weeks max - and carefully defined together with us before the work starts. We give priority to experiments that we think will produce results that will be useful to other artists or researchers through the documentation. Laboratoriet is always involved in an experiment - in setting the frame, and during the experiment as facilitators, analysts or observers.
