Clerk With Down Syndrome Gives Special Needs Mom a Moment She'll Never Forget
#SeeAmazing is a campaign recently launched by sesame street to highlight the amazing strengths of children with Autism and their parents. Ok what is amazing we have been brought up to think that amazing is when a kid scores a touchdown or receives straight A's. In the world of Children with Special needs many find it hard to see the amazing in what these kids can do. Years ago I sat in an office being prepped by my co-workers about the kids all with special needs who I would be meeting in the next few days. When I recall the conversations nothing that was said by co-workers was remotely positive. It was all they scream, they struggle and well struggle was the word that I heard alot. A few days later the kids in my class all came through the door. Here are the amazing things about this year - all could navigate around the school with minimal assistance (oh by the way they were all blind or visually impaired.) - by the end of the year two children were taking steps to walk independently - the one child who I was told who would scream when he met me he did not , what my co-workers failed to do was to give him credit for maturing over the two months that they did not see him over the summer. What I learned to do as an Educator for the two years that I worked at the school was. 1) to think outside of the box to use the internet to research new ideas to help the kids in my class reach their full potential 2) lastly to relish the small victories and to stop thinking of success in the traditional sense of the word. I am still in contact with one of the kids from that class, he now walks independently he can bang the heck out of a musical instrument and his smile lights of the room, he is amazing and he continues to amaze me
