Wood from ash trees killed by the Emerald Ash Borer has been transformed into innovative products thanks to a design competition organized by Ontario Wood, the City of Toronto and IIDEXCanada. More than a dozen products created from Toronto’s untapped ash wood resource are on display this week at the IIDEX Woodshop. Products range from outdoor lounge chairs to toy building blocks to wall-mounted bicycle stands. Guild Park was among the places ravaged by this invasive insect. About 3,000 ash trees were cut down in Guild Park due to a combination of the Emerald Ash Borer and damage from the 2014 ice storm. An estimated 200,000 ash trees across the city will be lost in the next 5 years due to this infestation . This year's "Woodshop aims to reduce the number of ash trees headed for the landfill by creating innovative, market-ready commercial and consumer prototypes," according to event organizers. The IIDEX Woodshop runs from today (Jan 18) through Sunday Jan 24 at the main Rotunda at Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West. Admission is free. An on-line article describes the recent work done at Guild Park to prepare its facilities for the return of arts and culture actives. The information comes from the City of Toronto's Museums & Heritage Services. It tells about creating the new Monument Walk at Guild Park, a project that involved repositioning 19 architectural artifacts and sculptures originally collected by the site owners, Rosa and Spencer Clark. The on-line story also describes the major remedial work done inside the park's "Building 191" (the office building used by the Clarks), and the site's two log cabins, one of which is more than 150 years old. The photo from the City of Toronto shows two staffers wearing protective "Haz-Mat" suits while doing this work. "Museums & Heritage Services has also been responsible for the environmental abatement of the three heritage buildings at the Guild. The two cabins had been home to generations of wildlife; while there was no led or asbestos, the interiors were equally hazardous," states the article. "Building 191 was a much greater challenge. Full of furniture, decorative arts and ephemera, everything had to be sorted. Materials to be salvaged were cleaned, packed and moved to the Museums & Heritage Services collections facility.... All three buildings are now safe and ready to be improved for new uses." The revitalization at Guild Park was selected as one of the Scarborough Mirror’s “10 Stories That Changed Scarborough In 2015.” Reporter Mike Adler noted how the redevelopment partnership for the old Guild Inn site was formalized between the City of Toronto and Dynamic Hospitality and Entertainment. He also commented that the City seems prepared to invest millions of public funds to upgrade Guild Park and has begun public consultations about bringing arts facilities back to the site. “Former owners [of the Guild Inn property] Rosa and Spencer Clark would be proud,” wrote Adler. Other Scarborough stories making the Top 10 list for 2015 include: • the call to create a new and unified hospital for Scarborough; • the “community renewal campaign” for Scarborough, launched by local Rotary clubs; • work on the Scarborough Subway; • the successful Pan Am Games and its lasting legacy to Scarborough – the new Sports Centre; • TamilFest 2015, which celebrated the role of Scarborough’s Tamil community; and • The expected go-ahead of an expanded National Urban Rouge Park. The new year is a good time to remember Spencer Clark's appointment to the Order of Canada a generation ago. The major role that Spencer and his wife, Rosa, played on the art and architecture sector of Toronto and all of Canada has become less appreciated over the years. In 1932, the couple founded the Guild of All Arts on their property, which is now known as Guild Park & Gardens.. After opening their home as a haven to Canadian creators, the Clarks established the Guild Inn and later the Guildwood Village community. For these and other life-long endeavours, Spencer was awarded the Order of Canada in December 1983, about two years after Rosa's death. The accompanying photo of Spencer (Getty Images) was taken in the 1980s. The setting is in front of one of the building facades preserved by the Clarks and which remains on public view at Guild Park today.. Below is Spencer's brief bio that accompanied the national honour of becoming a Member of the Order of Canada:: "H. Spencer Clark, CM, BASc, MRAIC - An engineer who developed broad interests in history, he became a patron of the arts and crafts and a force in historical preservation. "In 1932 he and his wife founded the Guild of All Arts at Scarborough, Ontario, which supported artists and crafts people in difficult times. By the 1950s he was rescuing elements from Toronto architecture under demolition and re-erecting them at the Guild. "He has also helped to save Sibbald Park on Lake Simcoe, the Musical Ride of the RCMP and the covered bridge in Hartland, New Brunswick." In 2016, as construction work begins to revitalize the buildings and facilities at Rosa and Spencer Clark's former home, let's consider ways to keep alive the memory of these unique philanthropists.
