Playing the Volume Game Vs. Playing the Niche Game When starting a small business, it’s common to get overwhelmed with other people’s opinions of how THEY think YOU should run your own business. Don’t let it frustrate you, as often your critics’ advice is based on zero to minimal experience. For me, I’ve always heard, “generalize to get more clients” or “pick a niche and stick to it.” But what’s the better option for targeting a market for a small business, really? Here are a few features of each category: Niche Market Targeting a product or service for a specific niche market • There’s obviously less competition if you are targeting a smaller pool of fish • It’s often easier to pitch to customers when you have a focus on your idea • It takes less time to build up a specialized contact list for marketing purposes when you know exactly who you are targeting • Your clients may be more prepared to pay for your specific expertise • Customers will keep coming back if you become a niche industry expert General Market Targeting a product or service to a general mass market • Appealing to the majority of customers in the market • Higher capacity and production capabilities without scaling • Heavier promotion and marketing operation costs to create a leading brand • Less likely to attract competition if successful • Less vulnerable to market changes ie. putting everything in one basket In my opinion, it’s always better to be specific. Emphasize the years of experience you have in your field, or the number of clients or products sold. Tell your clients about the projects you’ve worked on, your volunteer work, and definitely network with the contacts in your field! Your niche contacts can give you advice that actually comes from real life experiences that may help you run your business better! If you have an opinion to share on Volume Vs. Niche, feel free to leave a comment! --- Debra Weinryb Founder & Content Creator www.pedalcommunications.com
