Twinleaf in The garden
Twinleaf - Jeffersonia diphylla in my shade garden. Twinleaf is a striking shade plant, that emerges from the soil in early spring with purple leaves and flower buds. The flowers open a few days later for a very quick bloomtime. The foliage is a soft blue green with two identical halves suggesting the wings of a buterfly. The leaves withstand drought and will often pesist until fall. Twinleaf belongs to the Berberidaceae family
Saint Catharines Native Plant Garden
Big changes in this urban garden. When we started work on this property it was left to run wild with a plethora of non native weeds. The front deck, back patio and fences were falling apart. With the help of Functional Art Custom Carpentry we replaced the hardscape on the property, Dylan removed the weeds and prepared the garden. Next spring we will be instaling the all native garden on this blank slate, no lawn what so ever....Can't wait!

"We need to protect our forests in the Niagara region. We have so little left already, and once the damage is done it can't be reversed." Here's an enlightening read on how province is selling our regions biodiversity to seduce foreign investors.
Eastern Columbine in the garden
Our native version of a garden classic. Eastern Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) Blooms earlier by a week or two than the more common and non native(Aquilegia vulgaris). The blooms often open the week the Ruby Throated Hummingbird arrives from the south. The hummingbirds greatly appreciate the early flowers to refuel after a long journey.
