BOIL WATER NOTICED RESCINDED Replaced with Water Quailty Advisory Due to High Turbidity Levels Date: May 6, 2017 @ 5:30pm Water samples collected from our water system indicate that it is no longer necessary, for the majority of people, to boil water prior to consumption. We suspect that a laboratory or sampling error occurred and was the trigger for the Boil Water Notice issued on May 4, 2017. However, the Boil Water Notice is being replaced and downgraded to a Water Quality Advisory due to a separate issue. Recent heavy rain and runoff has resulted in high turbidity (cloudiness) levels in our surface water source but is not yet at a level where another Boil Water Notice would be issued. Elevated turbidity is a common occurrence during the wet spring season in Nelson. A high turbidity level may impair the effectiveness of the disinfection treatment system. If disinfection is impaired, disease causing microorganisms may escape into the water distribution system resulting in the risk of intestinal illness. People with undeveloped immune or severely weakened immune systems, infants and the elderly may be at increased risk. Due to the above concerns and as a precautionary measure, water users may still choose to boil their water - bring all water to a rolling boil for at least one minute and let it cool before using it, or use bottled water. We will inform residents when the Water Quality Advisory, due to High Turbidity Levels, is removed. Enquiries: Please call the Manager of Municipal Services at (250) 551-8103 or Interior Health Unit at (250) 505-7200

UPDATE ON BOIL WATER NOTICE May 5, 2017 at Noon The City of Nelson has implemented our Emergency Response Plan for Drinking Water and has issued notifications to the general public through local radio, print and social media and via direct communication (phone, fax or in-person) to Hospitals, Childcare Facilities, Seniors Homes, Home Support and Health Units, Physicians and Dentists, Police and Fire, Restaurants, Grocers, Plumbers and a list of residents who have special medical needs. Following the issuance of a Boil Water Notice, the Interior Health Authority requires the City of Nelson to submit two (2) compliant water quality samples, taken 24 hours apart and from the same location in our water distribution system. The City of Nelson has received the first of these sample analyses, taken yesterday and analyzed by the laboratory overnight: This sample is clean and fully compliant. We are currently flushing the system and sampling for a second time. Results from the lab should be available tomorrow afternoon, and if compliant, the Boil Water Notice can be lifted with the final approval from the Interior Health Authority. The earliest that we can lift the Boil Water Notice is the afternoon of Saturday May 6, 2017. We thank residents and businesses for sharing this information with friends and neighbours in Nelson. If you own or operate Food Preparation Premises, Interior Health provides a guidance document that provides operational guidance during a Boil Water Notice: https://www.interiorhealth.ca/YourEnvironment/FoodSafety/Documents/Food%20Premises%20During%20a%20BWN%20Guidelines.pdf
