Military & Veteran Family Health Research Group
Description
We are doing research on military & veteran family health in Canada. We are a group of academic researchers and graduate students who are focusing on the health of Canadian military and veteran families. We represent research being done at universities such as Queen's University, Mount Saint Vincent University, and the University of Calgary. Some of our research focuses on children, some on spouses, and some on families as a whole. We also engage with professions who work with military and veteran family members, including healthcare professionals and educators. This page highlights ongoing research projects and creates an opportunity to engage those who are interested in participating in this important research area.
This understanding will help to improve services and programming that address the challenges military and veteran families may be experiencing and to leverage military family strengths and promote resilience within military families.
All research described on this page is conducted in affiliation with Queen’s University, Mount Saint Vincent University, and/or the University of Calgary and has been granted ethical clearance by the Principal Investigator's university research ethics board.

Military couple receives funding to offer PTSD workshop to military and first responder families
Wounded Warriors recently made a large donation to the COPE (Couples Overcoming PTSD Everyday) Program. COPE was co-founded by LCol (retired) Chris Linford, his wife Kathryn Linford and Dr. Tim Black. LCol (retired) Linford served in the Canadian Forces for 33 years and was diagnosed with PTSD in 1994 after his deployment to Rwanda. Linford and his wife worked as a couple, following his return from Afghanistan in 2011, in helping Linford recover and transition. Thank you to the Linfords and Dr. Black for their dedication to helping military families experiencing PTSD and thanks to Wounded Warriers for supporting COPE and military families. 'My husband came home a stranger': One family's struggle with PTSD
In this CBC article Yvette Brend describes her family's experience with PTSD after her husband and CBC journalist, Curt Petrovich, returned from an assignment to cover a Typhoon in the Philippines. This piece certainly speaks to the impact of PTSD and the family that some military families can relate to. "...my Curty never came home. A man did return to my house. But he was hollow-eyed. Zombie-like. It took years to connect with him again, and we are still working on it." - Yvette Brend http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/my-husband-came-home-a-stranger-one-family-s-struggle-with-ptsd-1.3967613
