Did you know that the MacLachlan offers workshops? New this year we are partnering with Lee Valley, 616 Gardiners Rd, to offer the Shaker Woodworking Skills Series. By the end of this series you will gain experience shaping wood using traditional hand tools, turning a spindle on a lathe, sliding dovetails, as well as tool selection and proper care of edge tools. Aug 6 – At the museum we will investigate two different candle stand designs from two different communities. By the end of the day, each participant will have decided on a design, selected their wood, and shaped the legs with hand tools. Aug 13 – At the Lee Valley workshop, we will shape the spindle - considered by some to be the defining aesthetic element and one that non-shakers find virtually impossible to replicate. Aig 20 – On this day we will learn to cut sliding dovetails to fit the legs to the base. Aug 27 & 28 – This last weekend is for shaping and fitting the top and general finishing. Cost: $235 For more detials visit: http://woodworkingmuseum.ca/event/shaker-woodworking-skill-series/2016-08-06/ 613-542-0543

Visitor of the Week Visitors: Theresa Reynolds, Ruth Hughes, Margaret Gibson Hi everyone! I am so excited to announce that I have found our very first Visitors of the Week! Theresa Reynolds, Ruth Hughes, and Margaret Gibson came in to the museum on June 2 and we could not have been happier that they stopped by. Theresa and Ruth are Kingston locals who were looking for fun activities to do with Theresa’s sister, Margaret, who was visiting from Vancouver. They read an article in The Whig about our exhibit on Shaker furniture and decided to stop by. I toured the three ladies through the museum and quickly learned that they had many interesting things to tell me about its history. Ruth and Theresa had been to the original museum when it was owned by Sandy MacLachlan and located on his family’s lumber yard out on Princess Street back in the 1970s. At this early point in the museum’s history, the log house was the only building but according to Ruth and Theresa it was well known and visited because the MacLachlan Lumber Yard was the primary place to purchase lumber in the city. Ruth and Theresa said that they had been to the museum a few times but their husbands had visited many more. The friends describe the museum as “old, packed full of tools so that you could not see the walls, but also quaint and interesting.” Ruth remembers the old museum as “cozy like her grandfather’s workshop.” Both Ruth and Theresa distinctly remember being concerned about losing the museum when the receiver of the Mac Lumber company put it up for sale in 1981. Like many other members of the Kingston public they were afraid of losing a part of Kingston’s history and all of the artifacts Sandy had acquired. At the end of their tour, the ladies were pleased to see how the museum had developed throughout the years. I am honoured to have had the opportunity to meet and speak with Theresa, Ruth and Margaret. Their unique knowledge of the museum’s history was great to hear. If you have anything to share come by the museum and maybe you can be the next visitor of the week! -Amanda, Summer Student & Mac Blogger
