Soil Your Undies Campaign

Healthy soil is essential to plant growth and is important to our agricultural industry. The provincial budget reflects this in programs such as the Agriculture Stewardship Program, ALUS, Environmental Farm Plans, and investments in innovative drone technology. As part of the Soil Conservation Council of Canada's Soil Your Undies campaign, Ministers Alan McIsaac and Robert Mitchell buried white cotton underwear earlier today in a PEI farmers field. They will check back in a few months to see how much the fabric has decomposed. A high level of decomposition indicates a healthy and biologically active soil.

PEI's economy is growing, and the recent balanced budget shows this. Thanks to our growth in the economy and workforce, our diversity and deep respect for the resources of Island taxpayers, there were no tax increases in the 2017-2018 budget. As a matter of fact, government was even able to lower provincial income tax for as many as 85,000 Islanders (by increasing the basic personal exemption by 2%).

PEI's balanced budget supports the economic health of our #MightyIsland. Just look at the GDP figures released yesterday by StatsCan. In 2016 Prince Edward Island’s Gross Domestic Product rose by 2.4 per cent - that's our largest increase in a decade! It's almost double the national average and is the strongest in the Atlantic Provinces. Working with the many Island businesses that contribute to our economic health, Government will continue to support entrepreneurship and grow our economy.

April 28 marks100 years since the last iceboat was used for daily crossing between PEI and NB. For 90 years, iceboats carried mail, passengers, and goods across the ice in the Northumberland Strait. Those who worked and traveled on these iceboats faced tedious conditions, braving frigid water, ice, snow, and the winds of the Northumberland Strait. Watch the video of students Matthew Murphy and Jessica Larsonthe reciting the poem The Iceboat Crew: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdZj8fhtmf8&feature=youtu.be

Day of Mourning – today we honour the memory of workers who have been injured or killed on the job. Each work death or injury impacts loved ones, family, friends and coworkers, changing all of their lives forever. This is also an important opportunity to raise awareness of workplace safety. We must renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace. We must work together to prevent future injuries, illnesses and deaths.
