facebook.comAs one chapter closes another begins I would like to formally announce and introduce that Port Pirie's St George Greek Orthodox community has been assigned a new Parish priest. In consultation with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of South Australia and also with Father Axillios we are pleased to announce that Father John Scherstobit has been selected and assigned to service Port Pirie's Greek Orthodox Community. Father John will be conducting the Following Saturday Evening Orthodox Vespers 5pm to 6pm Sunday Morning Services Holy Liturgy 8am to 11.30am Once per month he will attend the Nursing homes and hospital to visit the sick and elderly, and for those of our community who are unable to attend Church due to their age or health he will be happy to attend your homes to provide communion or any other religious readings or blessings. Father John will formally take over and begin on Saturday the 11th Of February conducting the first of his Saturday evening vespers, Father John will be conducting Church services in both English and Greek, in discussion with Father John and His Grace Bishop Nikandros this is the next phase of our Orthodox faith ensuring that our young generation understand the faith and the words that are spoken during Holy Liturgy We the committee believe it's time that we accommodate our wider community, not all of us young and old understand the entire service in Greek and by adopting Father John as our Parish priest it will provide our community with the opportunity to have the Holy liturgy service performed in both English and Greek and Importantly will give our young generation the opportunity to fully understand the service. Father John will also attend our Saturday Night dinners, he wishes to become an integral part of our community and although he wont reside here he will be making every effort to engage the wider community. Saturday the 11th of February Father John will formally be introduced and welcomed to the community he will be attending our Saturday Night dinner at the Hellenic Centre i hope and trust that our community will attend that night to welcome Father John to our Community. This is the beginning of the next chapter for our beloved St George Port Pirie, and i trust that father John will provide the very much needed English/ Greek services that our community needs to ensure that our Greek Orthodox faith remains both active and prosperous for our future generations. With that I formally welcome Father John and wish him all the very best here in Port Pirie Emanuel Skorpos President Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and Community of Port Pirie.
As one chapter closes another begins but with that closing chapter I think its important to acknowledge and respect what Father Axillios has provided and given to the community of Port Pirie. As most would know Father Axillios become a priest in the much later part of his life, devoting his time and energy to serving the cloth and importantly he has serviced The Port Pirie Greek Orthodox Community as our parish priest for some 15 years or more. Father Axillios has been an inspiration to myself and the current committee, he was responsible for creating and forming this new committee which has given our Church and the Community a chance to regather, and work together in unison to ensure that our Orthodox faith will be maintained for future generations. Father Axillios has ensured that the doors have remained open to our beloved St George during his time as Parish priest, without him during this time our beloved church and community would have surely been lost, however thanks to his service his love for the community and importantly his will to service the communities religious needs today the Greek Orthodox Community of Port Pirie has a strong and positive future, one that we the committee and community can continue to build on for our future generations. Father Axillios will always be loved respected and importantly welcome to attend and assist the next assigned parish priest here in Port Pirie, Father Axillios remains an integral part of our community and I trust he will always be available to our Port Pirie community if anyone may need a priest in an emergency. With that I on behalf of the committee and Community of Port Pirie would like to wish Father Axillios all the very best in his future, and hope that the new roads he wishes to open in the far west and far north of the state are both fullfilling and rewarding. To those communities I would like to wish you all the very best you are very lucky to have Father Axillios wanting to travel such great distance to service and provide your communities with our Orthodox Faith. Father Axillios Thankyou for everything you have done for Port Pirie you will always remain loved and respected, and importantly St George Port Pirie's doors will always be open to you, with that we wish you all the very best. I would like to announce an emergency special general meeting of the Greek Orthodox community of Port Pirie to be held on Sunday 29th of January at 2pm at the Hellenic Centre. It is very important that all financial members attend this meeting as it's crucial to the future of the church and the communities needs from its future serving priest, as well as this meeting will also cover the upgrade of the constitution which has been finalized and is ready for consultation with the financial members. Please Note that this emergency general meeting is for financial members only, if you were not a financial member during the 2016 financial year you will not be granted entry into the meeting. It is most important that all our financial community members attend this meeting and a quick friendly reminder that 2017 memberships are due would be good if they could be paid on the day. Thankyou. Emanuel.
