facebook.comWORKSHOP - SHOP DOCTORS – HANDS ON Tool-time Improvements! With limited space being available in the new workshop the apprentice lockers had to be placed in a designated area which is away from their normal work-space. This new location however meant the apprentices were constantly needing to walk from their lockers to their jobs leading to an increase in time wastage. To eliminate this, trolley toolboxes have been purchased so the fitters can have all their tools next to them all of the time. The trolleys are a once off purchase and will remain in the workshop for subsequent 1st year apprentices. Additionally all tradesmen have now been trained in writing safe permit to work and level 2 lockout isolations. Previously only 2 people in the team were able to do this task which led to time being wasted due to the need to spend time chasing them up if they were out of the office. In another improvement, the team can ban has been moved from outside the building into a more accessible area inside the workshop so consumables are all closer to the job area. These consumables can now be stored in greater quantity so the team does not run out of vendor held items. While these initiatives in isolation may seem insignificant, collectively they are leading to substantial improvements in the workshop. Well done to everyone for initiating and implementing these improvements.

Closure of another Redevelopment Milestone This week we saw another milestone associated with the redevelopment with the demobilisation of the last of the large cranes working on the construction associated with the project. With completion of the TSL Furnace Building cladding panel installation on Tuesday, the Lampson Max-er subsequently lowered its boom and was removed from site. At the peak of construction, the project was utilising 11 major cranes (>100t capacity) which were also supported by numerous smaller cranes. Included in the crane fleet was the enormous Lampson LTL-2600 Transi-Lift which is listed in the world’s top ten and which carried out the biggest lift undertaken as part of the project. At the commencement of the redevelopment construction in 2014, the arrival of cranes was a positive symbol to the site, and the community, that we had started to embark on a journey that would turn the fortune of our site around, and not only would a sustainable future for be assured for the site, but the improvement in our future environmental performance would deliver the improvement so critically necessary in children’s health.
Milestone FIRST TAP AND CAST from the Nyrstar Port Pirie Ausmelt furnace onto the Slag Caster occurred on the evening of Friday 15th December, 2017.
MILESTONE FOR THE REFINERY MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE TEAM Recently the Refinery Mechanical Maintenance team reached 365 days injury free. The previous 10 year average for the team for reportable injuries is 56 days, with 71 workers sustaining injuries over this extended period. The resulting injuries have ranged from minor cuts and abrasions to more serious injuries like cutting the thumb tendon with an angle grinder which required 6 months on restricted duties. With this unacceptable amount of injuries against the team they recognized the need to change the way they undertook their work. This need for constant improvement and innovation has driven a high focus on work area management, utilizing weekly work area safety inspections, assigning actions to area owners, constant discussion about best ways to work with information sharing, weekly safety topic videos, weekly team SWI reviews, upgrade of trade skills, creating SWI procedures for routine high risk work, and establishing safe work areas. All team members were involved with team members setting expectations around any work at height, plant interactions and clarification of what permits are required to allow work to commence. Any injury has been taken as an opportunity to eliminate re-occurrence. Congratulations to the whole team for taking ownership and accountability to improve their safety performance.
“Safer, more resource efficient and less polluting operations are at the core of Nyrstar’s Transformation to a world class smelting and mining business." "Nowhere in our company is this more apparent than at Port Pirie with the Redeveloped site setting us up for step-change environmental improvements in years to come. Taking advantage of this opportunity requires everyone’s involvement, every day. Let’s make the most of it!”. - Johan Skoglund, Nyrstar Group Environmental Manager. (Johan is pictured far right), Last week Group Environment Manager Johan Skoglund visited the site which has changed profoundly since his last visit. Johan’s presence was greatly appreciated by the Environment and Quality team who welcomed the opportunity to discuss our sites environmental strategy for Port Pirie and the broader business face to face. In addition to a tour to become reacquainted with the site, he reviewed the data collection processes for the Sustainability Report and, the site environmental risks and liabilities. We also kindly arranged for a series of 36 degree days to get him nicely acclimatized to the Port Pirie summer before returning to the European winter.
