Apprentice - we are seeking a new junior Apprentice in Telecommunications. If you are interested in applying, please contact paul.templer@masnational.com.au We insist that an apprentice will be fit and healthy as our staff MUST be able to work in stressful situations (heat etc) in ceilings, on roofs etc and in isolated areas alone (when qualified)...and, would prefer someone prepared and able to learn to climb transmission towers - cannot be afraid of heights. Also, you can't be colourblind as our cables use colour codes for identification. Must be prepared to work away from home and share accommodation with other staff if required. This is an exciting industry to be in...and has a very bright future.

Fantastic news! Arid Land Communications is presently the leading NEC Dealer in South Australia and is in the top 10 for Australia! Punching above our weight! We consider this a great honour and milestone for this small business - we've often been in the top 5 or so dealers but, having a good year, we've topped it out (for the moment) and it's all done without a sales person. As techs, we have to make our sales work so it's in our best interest to do our best.

NBN rolls on - most of Port Augusta reaches the end of the 18 month grace-period about July 2017...so there isn't much time to organise the swap. We've heard of some conversions that have gone really well...but mostly we hear about the disasters! Just be aware that if funny things happen after the conversion, don't take it as gospel that "your phone system is faulty" as, in a number of cases, it hasn't been and unfortunately the people concerned have paid "incorrect callout" fees...there ARE known issues with firmware in routers, and some problems with the old exchange which is causing grief even prior to the cutover. If you aren't sure or have been told "the phone system is faulty" or that compatibility issues with the NBN are caused by "the phone system", please check with us.

Do you want to save heaps on your business phone calls? Talk to us about SIP lines for your phone system - or a phone system that can actually manage SIP lines. Untimed fixed rate calls anywhere in Australia to fixed phones for 11c - mobiles for 18c per minute on 1 second increments (ie, a 30 second call to a mobile in Australia is 9c)...and 2 to 3c per minute typically to most countries. NBN update...we are busy fixing NBN problems...the most common is the equipment being installed in an inconvenient position. Unfortunately, the installers are on a very small margin and are paid the same to install 3m or 40m from the external box. Most are very helpful and, unless you are rude or demanding, will often go the extra metre without complaint. You are entitled, within reason, to have the equipment installed within 40 cable metres (remember ups / downs and often cables cannot be installed diagonally - even in a ceiling) of the same building. You will, if you have an alarm system, almost certainly need cabling to the alarm box / socket, or may want to use the existing telephone cabling which MUST also be disconnected from the old telephone exchange to work correctly. Other issues include No Dial Tone or No Internet...and sometimes the facilities on the phone service will be different or not provided (either NOT available or not programmed as requested). Arid Land Communications can provide cabling and configuration of computers and telephone systems - we CANNOT fix provisioning errors - you will have to report them to your Service Provider - but we may be able to help with a technical diagnosis.

Finally, we are on the NBN - data and phone lines - it wasn't simple with the Telstra Technician here for 3.25 hours and a faulty (new) router...Nick persevered and the results appear very good...very crisp, clean transmission on the phones, and our data speed is around 23.7M out of a 25M plan...impressed so far. Thanks Nick!

NBN - this is what you need to do: You MUST subscribe to NBN within the 18 month period after "go live" - for PA central, this will be about June 2017...later for PAW and, Stirling North etc...if you don't, you will lose your number and broadband access. You choose from up to about 50 Service Providers...in this case, Telstra ceases to be a Carrier and becomes a Service Provider...and you can, in most cases, roll over existing plans to the NBN so you pay no more but receive better speeds etc. Choose a plan that suits your needs - call costs, download allowance...if you plan to download movies etc, you will need a fairly large allowance and may consider a higher speed which you pay for. If you have a monitored alarm system or a medic alert alarm system, you MUST tell the Service Provider who will arrange for analog dial tone on the NTD (see below). We DO recommend a power supply / battery box so your alarm will work for up to 5 hours with the power off. The Service Provider will arrange for NBN installers to come and install the NTD (Network Termination Device) and optional battery box / power supply...you are entitled to have it installed in a suitable location within reason and 40 cable metres - talk to the installers and come up with a plan that doesn't cost you any more - ie, so you don't have to pay for extra cabling. The Service provider will send you a Router and any other equipment you need - you can pay for an installation or do it yourself or arrange your own tech support. We can do all of that. You MAY need additional cabling to get your existing services working - again, we can do all of that.

NBN Connections...hey, it works...we are now connected at work on a standard 25M plan getting 23.5M which is about 4x faster than our previous ADSL service clocked. Shaekhar and Paul installed it very quickly to the conduit we had prepared and it worked pretty well first up. Here are some clues...it almost certainly won't give service initially - Joel had to do some configuration to make the Router work - we have analog dial tone for our alarm system BUT, the IAD (interface analog digital) that should give dial tone for our normal working lines doesn't...due to cutover on Jan 29th and we are not sure what to expect - I'll keep you posted. Now...a lot of people report that the installers put the NTD and power supply (if requested) in awkward locations - bedrooms and the like...this is because most houses have the bedrooms on the front...and the installers are paid the same for an easy or difficult installation. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO ASK FOR IT TO BE PUT IN A SUITABLE POSITION OF YOUR CHOICE...but hey, be reasonable....the installers are trying to make a living against pretty tough deadlines...talk to them as human beings and come to an agreement...but don't be bullied into accepting the easiest installation and NO, the internal cable is NOT limited to 2 bends as was used as an excuse.
