F1 comes to 2016 Phillip Island Classic Festival Of Motorsport • Famous ex-Graham Hill/Jackie Stewart F1 BRM • Ex-Alan Jones Williams FW06 in its first Australian race • Up to 30 Formula 5000s competing Two famous Formula 1 cars with unique Australian connections will be coming ‘home’ from the UK for the 2016 Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport from March 11-13 – thanks to their current enthusiastic UK owners, Andrew and Margaret Wareing. From the 1960s comes the works 1.5 litre BRM P261-5 that was raced by Graham Hill, Ritchie Ginther and Jackie Stewart in Formula 1 from 1964. Later, factory-fitted with a larger 2.0-litre V8 engine, the same car contested the 1965, 1966 and 1967 Tasman Championship in Australia and New Zealand with Stewart and Richard Attwood. Driven by Graham Hill, the car’s best F1 result was second in the 1964 French Grand Prix, while in 1966 it scored five race victories in the 1966 Tasman Series, with Stewart taking four of its race wins to clinch the eight-race Australian-New Zealand Championship. Following its F1 era, P261-5 was fitted with a 3.0-litre BRM V12 engine and driven in non-Championship races in 1968/69 by David Hobbs, Tony Dean and Charles Lucas. After spending some years in a Museum in the UK, the BRM was returned to its original 1.5 litre GP spec to meet Historic Grand Prix Cars Association regulations before it was acquired 10 years ago by the Wareings, who have since raced it in HGPCA events, Historic Monaco and the Goodwood Revival. The BRM has also been driven in recent years by Sir Jackie Stewart in demonstrations. The Wareings are also bringing their famous Williams FW06 to Phillip Island – the first car produced by the combination of Frank Williams and Patrick Head for their Williams Grand Prix Engineering Formula One team. Powered by a Cosworth DFV 3.0 litre V8 engine and driven by Australia’s Alan Jones, the FW06 competed as a lone Williams works entry in all 16 rounds of the 1978 FIA World Championship. It finished in the points three times, with Jones’ best result being second place in the US GP at Watkins Glen. Chassis FW06/03 also saw service in the first four races of the 1979 season, with Jones finishing third place at Long Beach. However by now the car was being left behind by the ground effects cars of Lotus, Ligier, Tyrrell and others and it was replaced by the FW07 that Jones ultimately used to win the 1980 World Championship. Following its F1 career, Williams sold FW06/03 in mid-1979 to a wealthy Italian industrialist, who used it for private track days before it was purchased by its current owners in 1992. Since then the famous Williams has been driven by Alan Jones at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Wareings have lent it back to Williams GP for other displays and demonstrations. Andrew Wareing (with Margaret’s permission!) will drive both the former F1 cars at this year’s Phillip Island Classic FOM. At the meeting, the BRM P261-5 will compete in Group M & O events for open wheelers from 1961-1970, where one of its main rivals will be another great F1 car of the 1960s – the 1968 2.5-litre Repco Brabham V8 of Victorian Peter Strauss. Meanwhile, Andrew Wareing will also race the FW06/03 at Phillip Island in the Q & R events for racing cars built from 1970-1985. Here, its principal F1 rivals will be the 1971 March 741 to be raced by four times Australian Champion, John Bowe and the 1985 ex-works Lola 1.5 Turbo of Sydney’s Iain Ross. The open wheeler programme at this year’s ‘Classic’ will also see a near- record number of Formula 5000 racing cars compete over the event’s three-day programme, with 13 cars coming from New Zealand to take on 17 of Australia’s top 5.0 litre V8 open wheelers in the hands of their local drivers. The 27th Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport is being staged by the Victorian Historic Racing Register with continued support from Penrite, Shannons, CoolDrive and Repco. CRG WELCOMES BACK DINO CHIESA The Italian factory announced the great comeback of Dino Chiesa as team principal. The talent scout and real karting guru, Dino Chiesa is going to be the 2016 team principal of CRG Racing Team. This is a comeback at CRG for Chiesa, as he was professionally born and bred at the factory led by Giancarlo Tinini in the 90s. Dino Chiesa had then decided to move on and start an independent professional path founding MBM first, but has always been bond to CRG and Zanardi by CRG also within his Chiesa Corse that distributed Zanardi chassis. Today the time for a stylish comeback as team principal is come. He will be managing the Racing Team and all the activities of the racing department (starting from chassis development). This choice has been required by the current important expansion of CRG and the consequent commitment of Tinini with the strategic coordination of all the divisions of the company. CRG is in fact experiencing an important evolution abroad with the opening of several strategically fundamental branches like CRG Nordam (the North-American branch) and CRG Great Britain (England). CRG will also continue the activity of Maxter engines, as well as the brand new Centurion line that is revolutionizing rental karting. Such an important diversification demands a reorganization of the activities and a wise choice of people in the neuralgic centers of the staff. For this reason, Dino has been chosen as team principal to follow all the activities of the racing department, including on track duties in international races, management of mechanics and technicians, and selection of works drivers in all categories, keeping an eye on the development of chassis and all material by CRG that is destined to go to the mass-production market. Dino Chiesa will continue to manage the research and development at Zanardi, which basically means that nothing fundamental is going to change. The only novelty is that Zanardi's racing department will be integrated within CRG. Chiesa Corse will still be the official distributor of Zanardi products, as it has been doing since the origin of the Zanardi brand. In essence, Dino Chiesa will be the contact point between CRG boss Giancarlo Tinini and the Racing Team, regarding technical, but also strategic choices. Dino Chiesa will be supported in his work at the racing team by some key figures like Glenn Keyaert, who has been in fact confirmed as team manager of CRG, after the great job done in 2015. Dino Chiesa is basically going to be Giancarlo Tinini's “terminal on the field” and will report directly to the patron of the Italian company. This will leave the due room to implement and develop all the company branches in this important period of growth and investment for the Group, that will involve both CRG and Zanardi through Chiesa Corse. The rejoining of Dino Chiesa and CRG will bring several advantages with it. One on all, the union of two powers: CRG Racing Team and Zanardi, two brands that have succeeded winning a stunning total of 42 World Titles and 44 European Titles over the years in the CIK-FIA categories they took part in. The union of these two brands within a common racing and development strategy will undoubtedly benefit the products to be marketed by CRG and Zanardi chassis by Chiesa Corse. Racing duties in 2016 will not only be focused on CIK-FIA classes though: the structure led by Dino Chiesa under the supervision of Giancarlo Tinini will also compete in Rotax and Iame X30 with both brands CRG and Zanardi. NICO ROSBERG BACK TO KARTING WITH CRG IN ADRIA The Mercedes F1 driver has run a test, together with the new CRG driver Flavio Camponeschi, in the CRG KZ Road Rebel chassis powered by a Maxter Engine. Nico Rosberg has been back to karting thanks to the great relationship he has with Dino Chiesa, CRG's new team principal that has been Nico's team manager at the turn of the Millennium, when the current Mercedes Formula 1 driver was competing in karting for CRG with team MBM (Mercedes Benz McLaren), alongside his team mate and still strong rival Lewis Hamilton. Nico Rosberg loves training with karting during Formula 1 breaks and he has often done so in the past few years. This time around, the occasion has been a test with CRG at the Adria Karting Raceway together with the new CRG driver, the KF1 World Champion and two times European Champion of KZ and KF, Flavio Camponeschi. Both drivers spent nearly three hours behind the wheel of the CRG Road Rebel chassis powered by the latest evolution of the Maxter engine, running quite busy but also funny sessions in Adria. Nico Rosberg took a break from his commitments while going back to a past that the German-Finnish driver has never forgotten. Nico Rosberg has always been among the main protagonists of karting competing with CRG in the Italian Championship and in North America from 1998 to 2001. He secured the second place in the European Championship of Formula A in 2000, curiously ending behind Lewis Hamilton and ahead of Marco Ardigò and Robert Kubica.
