When visiting friends in the Goulburn Valley this weekend, I came across quite a bit of this medicinal herb (weed). White horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is a traditional remedy for cough and phlegm. It can be made into a tea with boiling water poured over the leaves (fresh or dried), or prepared into a syrup with sugar or honey. It combines perfectly with rosemary, sage, thyme or hyssop for cough, sore throats and colds.

Tamarillo! In season now. This lovely bundle was home grown and gifted to me by a very generous client. They taste sour and sweet and smell a little like papaya to me. We eat the inside flesh with a teaspoon, but the whole fruit is actually edible. They're a great source of antioxidants, fibre and the mineral potassium. Give them a go!

The traditional practice of herbal and naturopathic medicine is as much an art as it is a science. In Australia the formal training at universities and colleges, often places far greater time and emphasis on the science. This means the future of traditional medicine practice is changing. I am proud to offer professional mentoring to help support new practitioners in developing the subtle skills of becoming a balanced practitioner. This means that sometimes I have other practitioners observing me in the clinic. It is of course completely up to the client if they would feel comfortable with another practitioner in the office. Please know that if you agree, you are helping to strengthen the future of herbal medicine practice in Australia. We don't want to lose all those skills which have been apprenticed for centuries!

A pinch of saffron threads soaking in boiling water to extract their magic. This could be used as natural food dye, flavouring a meal or a home remedy. Aren't plants just so perfect! I made this stunning golden glow into 'Everyday lentil soup with saffron yoghurt' recipe by @libertybrowne, and it was so warming and autumnal.

On paper my kids are eating just soup and toast. In reality it's homegrown pumpkin soup made with fresh chicken bone broth and lots of garlic, ginger and turmeric. The bread is wholegrain sourdough covered in ghee. Children's health and immunity hinges on their nutrient intake, particularly the fat soluble vitamins A, D and E. Traditionally made bone broths and ghee are both fantastic sources of these.

What is the most common complaint adults seek my help for? Stress and it's many manifestations. It makes my day when they come back and say how much more balanced they're feeling.

Simple Cough and Throat Syrup 1 onion sliced 1/2 cup raw honey 1 tbs apple cider vinegar Pour the honey and apple cider vinegar over the onion in a bowl and allow to sit for about an hour. The juice from the onion seeps in and forms a very soothing syrup for sore throats and scratchy coughs. Helps to naturally fight infections too. Take 1 tsp of syrup as often as needed. Safe for kids over 1 year old.
