BTC productions are always an entertaining night out, with highly enjoyable extras such as pre-show sherries, followed by supper after the final curtain. Established in 1976, BTC was known as Brighton Repertory Theatre, changing to Brighton Theatre Company in 1984. Granted use of a ground floor section of the Bayside Arts & Cultural Centre, with a separate entry from Carpenter Street (now Wilson Street), the Clocktower Theatre opened in 1999, giving Brighton Theatre Company a permanent home.

BTC stages four productions each year. The company aims to produce a range of theatrical experiences from comedy to drama, by a wide variety of Australian and overseas authors. Our directors are chosen from around Victoria, each one bringing new ideas and a wealth of experience for us to learn from.

Feedback from patrons is strongly encouraged, as we like to produce the kind of theatre that audiences enjoy, as well as giving our casts and crew members the opportunity to extend their creativity and further their technical skills.

BTC productions are always an entertaining night out, with highly enjoyable extras such as pre-show sherries, followed by supper after the final curtain and a chance to meet the cast & crew. Our programmes are free of charge and there is ample free-parking nearby as well. You can't ask for more than that!

BTC is a proud member of the Victorian Drama League.

Brighton Theatre Company commences their 2017 season with David Williamson’s Face to Face, playing at the Brighton Theatre until March 4. The lives of employees in a scaffolding business are scrutinised during a conflict resolution session facilitated by conflict counsellor, Jackie Manning. The outcome of this restorative justice negotiation will determine the fate of simple-minded, but hot-headed employee Glen Tregaskis, who has deliberately crashed into his boss Greg Baldoni’s Mercedes Benz car. Through Williamson’s cleverly assorted range of characters, Face to Face presents thought-provoking social commentary on how the compounding toxic effects of various workplace issues such as bullying, infidelity, jealousy, racism, resentment and exploitation can negatively impact the lives of employees and their families. The skilled, meticulous direction of Tim Long engages patrons throughout the ninety minute show and combined with a cast of ten top actors, the naturalistic meeting room set designed by Annie Blood and Tim Long (with slightly elevated rear platform ensuring patrons a full view of all onstage), Gaynor Johnson’s splendid costumes and Williamson’s well-crafted script, tick all the boxes for a first class production. Multi-talented Hayley Lawson-Smith is excellent in her role of meeting facilitator Jackie Manning. Authoritative, sensitive and compassionate, Lawson-Smith literally ‘runs the show’. Xavier Ryan is perfectly cast as Glen, and his performance grows more powerful as we begin to understand the reasons behind his erratic behaviour. Christine Bridge (Maureen Tregaskis), Janine Evans (Claire Baldoni), Verity East (Julie Rossiter), Tom Caine (Barry McLean), David Efron (Greg Baldoni), Matt Mirams (Richard Halligan), Jonathan Best (Luke Mitrovic) and Verity Jackson (Therese Martin) all deliver terrific performances. Congratulations to Brighton Theatre Company on another fine production – this time written by an Australian playwright, and directed and performed by some of the best in local theatre. Do try to see Face to Face before it finishes on March 4, and as a bonus, patrons can be assured of wonderful, friendly hospitality by front-of-house staff, with refreshments served at the end of the performance.

Audition notice - Hats Off! Our second show for 2017. Two audition times are available: 5 March at 3pm & 6 March at 7pm. Synopsis: It’s a weekend in October and five ‘approaching middle age’ women, who have known each other since they shared a student house when they were at university, are catching up at a holiday house in Daylesford owned by one of them. They reminisce about uni days and explore the possibilities of the future. Written by Alison Campbell Rate, and directed by Denise Wellington. To book an audition, please contact Denise via 0410 246 667 or denise.wellington110@gmail.com. Characters Summary: 5F (50s) HARRIET: Recently widowed, mother of three teenagers. University lecturer and owns the holiday house in Daylesford. She’s facing change and is looking for a way forward. TRINITY: Married, no children. Her husband is well-off so Trinity doesn’t need to work, although she trained as a teacher. She projects a somewhat flippant and carefree persona, but this is masking a deep sense of justice and instinct to protect. She prefers to keep things private. GABI: Single mum to a teenage boy, Gabi teaches Drama and English in a secondary school. She’s a bit scatty and usually looks to others for guidance and support. CASSIE: Married with two teenage daughters, Cassie is feeling disillusioned and locked in and she fantasises about escape. As she prefers order and predictability, shared student housing was rather challenging for her. The glass is half empty. MICHELLE: Married and without children, Michelle is a go-getter, clear thinker and straight talker with a dry wit and mischievous nature. She teaches French and Maths at secondary school and has promotion in her sights. Precast Characters: None Audition Venue: BTC Theatre, Brighton Arts & Cultural Centre, Cnr Wilson & Carpenter Streets, Brighton

Unfortunately, we have just been made aware that there will be no power to the Brighton Town Hall & Cultural Centre (where BTC is housed) this Sunday, 19 February, and therefore regretfully have to cancel the performance of Face to Face. We tried alternative arrangements but sadly were unable to find another solution. All ticket holders are being contacted by phone and we sincerely apologise. - BTC
