During the first few days of December 1941 a U.S. Air Cadet named Louis Ligouri was hitchhiking somewhere between San Francisco and Inglewood CA where he was to join others guarding B-17’s. Along the way he was picked up by Vincennes Indiana native, comic, radio, stage and screen star Red Skelton. They chatted all the way during the trip to Inglewood where he dropped off Ligouri and a lasting friendship was kindled by the trip. A few days later an invitation arrived at Inglewood for Ligouri from Red asking him to join him and his wife Edna at the New Year’s celebration at the Hollywood Palladium where all the Hollywood elite would be in attendance. Red went on to say “don’t worry about a date; I’ll take care of that”. A photograph that was taken of the Skelton table, is now on display at the Indiana Military Museum. The picture shows Skelton, his wife, Ligouri and his date. The date Red fixed Ligouri up, was none other than Hollywood screen star platinum blond Lana Turner. Skelton and Ligouri went on to continue their correspondence for most of their lives while Skelton continued his career adding the new medium of television to his repertoire, perhaps being known most fondly as “Freddie the Freeloader”. Ligouri went on to fly B-24 Liberators in Europe completing over 60 missions. Ligouri died in 1994 three years before Skelton. Ligouri’s daughter Suzanne Liougri Burke who works for the J Paul Getty museum in Los Angles kept many of the artifacts, letters and wartime memorabilia from her father squirreled away in a drawer at home. While going through these she realized just who the letters were from. Contact with a friend who was aware of the Indiana Military Museum led her to contact Jim Osborne curator of the museum. Ligouri’s flight jacket with mission markings on it, the ticket to the event autographed by band leader Tommy Dorsey, and a picture of those at Red’s table along with autographs were all donated to the museum by Suzanne Liougri Burke who stated how much she enjoyed her father’ things but Said “..I’d rather see it all here”.

Looks like the Indiana Military Museum’s WW1 event on March 25th and 26th this year will be having some Air Power. Tom Martin is expected to fly his replica Nieuport 23 over the battle field at the event. There is the possibility that he could be joined with another “Great War” aircraft weather providing.
