CBCR event held at JS Clark Middle School The Shreveport Police Department was awarded the Innovations in Community Based Crime Reduction Grant in 2016 from the Bureau of Justice Assistance. The program is designed to empower citizens and help restore neighborhoods through a collaborative approach that combines law enforcement, community development, stakeholders and residents to effectively reduce crime rates and improve the quality of life in those areas. We chose an area of the City that encompasses portions of Ledbetter Heights and Allendale neighborhoods for this grant. Saturday’s event was the culmination of the Planning phase and allowed us to get feedback from the community and discuss ways in which we can all work together to reduce crime and begin moving the neighborhood in a more positive direction. The Early Action Project included representation from many different agencies and businesses that serve this area and included games, food, and most importantly, people focused on the common goal of improving the neighborhood and allowing for future growth. This grant and this event would not have been possible without Mrs. Nicole Capers, State and Federal Grant Coordinator for the Shreveport Police Department. Mrs. Capers began working on this grant back in 2016 and has been actively involved in all stages of planning. We are very glad to have her as part of our team here at SPD!
Shreveport Police to hold safety checkpoint Shreveport Police will hold a safety checkpoint this Friday night in East Shreveport. The checkpoint, which is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, will begin at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 23, 2018 and run until 3:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018. The checkpoint is also part of a collaborative effort between multiple agencies (Louisiana State Police and Caddo Sheriff) to emphasize our commitment to make the streets of our city safe for everyone. Officers will be checking for impaired drivers, and Seatbelt violations along with any other violations that could potentially compromise the safety of those persons taking to the roadways. Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission as part of the continuing effort to help curb the number of those impaired drivers who take to the streets each year in our area.
Booker T Washington High School held its first ever "Like Father Like Son" Banquet on Saturday night, March 17, 2018. Shreveport Police Department’s Corporal LaDeris Jackson and security coordinator Danny Taylor spearheaded the event and many volunteers stepped up to make this event a night to remember for fathers and sons. Corporal Jackson and Security Coordinator Taylor use their daily contact with the teens at the school as an opportunity to foster trusting relationships and give guidance and sometimes just a shoulder to lean on when it is needed. Corporal Jackson developed the mentoring program called “Average Is Over” shortly after being assigned to the school in 2014. Since his arrival at the school, he has mentored dozens of young men and helped to keep them on the road to success. The Fathers and Sons night was designed to celebrate the roles that fathers have in their son’s lives. Guest speaker Marcus Hines, Public Information Officer for the Shreveport Police Department, gave words of support and encouragement to all of those fathers and father figures that take part in their child’s success. No one was left out. Corporal Hines highlighted the fact that many in the room were grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, cousins, or family friends that stepped up to encourage and help ensure their son’s success. Corporal Jackson credits Doctor Kristi Young, Principal of BTW, with giving them the opportunity to grow their mentoring program. “Without her continued support of this school and her staff, none of this would be possible.” said Corporal Jackson. Jackson and Taylor plan to make this a yearly event and are excited to see what the future holds for the young men of Booker T Washington High School.
