Join miSci for a FAMILY FUN afternoon with hands-on activities and immersive digital experiences inspired by the 200th anniversary of the original science fiction novel, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein! >> ACTIVITIES << AUTOMATA: make an automaton, a moving mechanical device BATTERY STACK: make a voltaic pile, the first kind of battery DOUGH CREATURE: make a creature out of conductive dough FRANKENTOY: make a “creature” by combining toy parts MONSTER MASK: make a mask with an LED bulb that lights up SCRIBBLE BOT: make a bot that can scribble on a sheet of paper SPARK OF LIFE: create a battery from metal and the human body >> BACKGROUND << Frankenstein is a 200-year-old story that explores themes of human creativity, societal responsibility, and scientific ethics. As citizens with access to incredible tools for creation and transformation, we need to understand the fundamentals of science and technology and develop the skills to actively participate in civic and policy discussions. Presented as part of the NSF's Frankenstein200 Project. >> ABOUT FRANKENSTEIN200 << Frankenstein200 takes on the challenge of supporting learning related to responsible innovation. The project uses themes from Frankenstein to examine emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and genetic engineering, while promoting the development of 21st century skills related to creative collaboration and critical thinking. Frankenstein200 explores three important questions: What is life?, Why do we create?, and What are our responsibilities as creators, scientists, and engineers?
