The District supports Northern California wildfire relief and recovery efforts and joins SMART in its Holiday Express Train toy drive. The holiday bus will be assigned to various Golden Gate Transit bus routes throughout the holiday season and into January 2018. The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District is showing support this holiday season to all the communities affected by this fall's devastating North Bay fires. The theme of our 2017 holiday bus is "Strength in Community." We'll be joining Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit and the Holiday Express Train at the Santa Rosa downtown station tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10:30AM to noon. SMART is asking the community to bring unwrapped toys and gift cards in its goal to fill two trainloads of toys this year! Our beautiful holiday bus--with its snowflakes, twinkling stars, and a Golden Gate Bridge snow globe--will be alongside the Holiday Express Train. And we'll be giving away fun goodies and surprises. See you there! #NorthBayStrong

District engineers recently traveled to Guelph, Ontario, Canada to observe wind tunnel testing of a scale model of the Bridge in anticipation of the next phase of our seismic retrofit project--the suspension span. The suspension span is the most iconic part of the Bridge and will be the most expensive section to retrofit and the most challenging for crews. To perform the work, workers will need to build platforms and enclosures under the roadway, and we need to ensure these don't disrupt the structural integrity of the Bridge. We want a structure that will last and be able to withstand anything Mother Nature puts at it. It's "What We Do."
