Bobi Cespedes

Cuban vocalist Bobi Céspedes and her band perform “Mensaje a Lola” from her album Patakín with guest percussionist John Santos, featured on SFJAZZ's Fridays at Five on October 2, 2020. ABOUT THIS CONCERT Treasured Bay Area singer Bobi Céspedes is a sonera of the classic Cuban style and for this performance, filmed in June 2019, she presented the world premiere of a selection of brand new songs from her then-forthcoming album Mujer y Cantante, joined by guest percussionist John Santos. Céspedes founded the influential Bay Area Cuban ensemble Conjunto Céspedes in 1981 with her brother Luis and nephew Guillermo, sharing the stage with salsa titans Tito Puenté, Rubén Blades and Celia Cruz. The singer worked with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum project beginning in 1998, recording two albums and touring the world with his ensemble that also featuring SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleón. Her long-awaited debut album, Rezos, was released in 2003, and this performance celebrates her new material and her quarter-century collaboration with Santos.

Wishing the very best to the great saxophonist, composer and Bay Area resident Gary Bartz on his 80th birthday! A virtuoso instrumentalist, Bartz began his career with Charles Mingus, Max Roach, and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before his lengthy associations with Miles Davis and McCoy Tyner. He founded his pioneering NTU Troop in 1968, releasing a series of influential albums that blend hard bop, soul, funk, African folk music, and spiritual jazz. He has recorded and performed steadily over the years, most recently as part of the all-star Heads of State quartet with pianist Larry Willis, bassist David Williams, and drummer Al Foster.
