The vote is coming!!!!!
We support Forest Lake PD and encourage everyone to get out and show your support tonight. The fact that a city the size of Forest Lake is considering shutting down the police department and going with the county shows how ill-informed their leadership really is when it comes to understanding the dynamics and structure of law enforcement agencies. This is something that is being pushed through by politics rather than actual logic and community input. While all of the folks at the Washington County Sheriff's Office are good folks, the structure of a Sheriff's Office is not set up the same as that of a local police department. You will not get the same level of responsiveness, nor will the community have the same level of control and influence over operations within their own community. Deputies will not have the same knowledge base of the city or its citizens (good guys vs. bad guys) as a local police officer does. In a Sheriff's Office, it is common for deputies to move around and bid different assignments each year and even during the year. There is nothing in this contract that is going to require a deputy to work strictly in the Forest Lake proper for any length of time. Another glaring difference between the Sheriff's Office and a local PD operation is that the Chief of Police and staff are on duty daily and responsive within the community. They office within the city hall and are easily accessed by the community. The commander with the Sheriff's Office overseeing the operation will not be stationed daily in the Forest Lake area. They will be based out of Stillwater and will come to Forest Lake when politics and meetings require. They will have duties and responsibilities outside of just worrying about the Forest Lake community. These are just a few of the glaring differences in a laundry list of reasons not to support shutting down the Forest Lake PD. What qualifies us to take this position? This has been authored by our very own Rusty Cruise, who prior to working in radio, spent 17 years working in law enforcement with both Sheriff's Offices and Police Departments in Minnesota.
